abstract Disclosed is a polycyclic compound having a π-conjugated heteroacene skeleton crosslinked via a carbon atom, a nitrogen atom, an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom.  Also disclosed is a halogen compound which can be used for the synthesis of the polycyclic compound.  Further disclosed is an organic electroluminescence element which comprises a cathode, an anode, and at least one organic thin film layer containing a light-emitting layer and arranged between the cathode and the anode, wherein at least one layer in the organic thin film layer comprises a material for the organic electroluminescence element.  The organic electroluminescence element has high luminous efficiency and has long service-life.  The polycyclic compound can be used for the production of the organic electroluminescence element.  The halogen compound is an intermediate for the polycyclic compound.
