Provided is a honeycomb structure that functions as a heater and has excellent thermal shock resistance. The honeycomb structure (100) has: a honeycomb structural portion (4) having porous partitions (1) compartmentalizing and forming a plurality of cells (2) and an external wall (3); and a pair of electrode units (21, 21) disposed on the honeycomb structural portion (4). The pair of electrode units (21, 21) is formed in a band shape extending in the direction of extension of the cells (2) in the honeycomb structural portion (4). In a cross section perpendicular to the direction of extension of the cells (2), one of the electrode units (21) is disposed on the opposite side to the other electrode unit (21), with the center (O) of the honeycomb structural portion (4) interposed therebetween, and the shapes of the cells (2) are quadrilateral or hexagonal. In a cross section that is perpendicular to the direction of extension of the cells (2) and includes the electrode units (21), each electrode unit (21, 21) is disposed in a position intersecting with at least one base line (L), which is a straight line that is parallel to the diagonal line connecting two opposing apexes of a given cell (2) and passes through the center of the honeycomb structural portion (4). |
