In one aspect, the invention relates to compounds having the formula: (I) where R 1 , R 2, R 3 , a, R 4 , R 5 , and R 6 are as defined in the specification, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. These compounds have neprilysin inhibition activity.
