The organic electroluminescent element is comprised of an anode, an organic layer, and a cathode laminated on top of a substrate and is characterized by the fact that at least one organic layer selected from a group comprising a light emitting layer, a hole transport layer, an electron transport layer, an electron blocking layer and a hole blocking layer includes a carborane compound that has at least one carborane ring with a silyl group on the carbon thereof.
