abstract The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a carbonaceous material for negative electrodes of nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which uses coffee beans as a starting material, and from which alkali metals such as potassium element and alkaline earth metals such as calcium element are sufficiently removed by decalcification, so that the carbonaceous material has high purity and ensured reliability; and a method for stably producing, with a high yield, an intermediate for obtaining the carbonaceous material for negative electrodes of nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries.nA starting material composition for the production of a carbonaceous material for negative electrodes of nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries contains an organic material that is derived from roasted coffee beans having an L value of 18.0 or less. A starting material composition for the production of a carbonaceous material for negative electrodes of nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries is composed of an organic material that is derived from roasted coffee beans having an L value of 19.0 or less.
