Provided is a titanium material for hot rolling that has a base metal 1b made from an industrial pure titanium or a titanium alloy, and a surface layer 1a that is formed on at least one rolling surface of the base metal 1b and has a chemical composition that is different from that of the base metal 1b. The thickness of the surface layer 1a is 2.0-20.0 mm and accounts for at most 40%, per side, of the total thickness. Regarding the elements included in the surface layer 1a but not included in the base metal 1b, when the contained amount of an element included in the surface layer 1a is measured at multiple points, the relationship |C AVE -C 0 |/C AVE ×100 is at most 40%, where C AVE is the average amount of the increase in the contained amount from the base metal 1b, and C 0 is the amount of the increase in the contained amount from the base metal 1b at each measurement location. The chemical composition of the surface layer includes at least one of Si, Nb, Ta, and Al as an element for which there is an increase in the contained amount from the base metal. The titanium material for hot rolling has a desired oxidation resistance despite being inexpensive. |
