abstract |
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide. The method may include the steps of: providing a carbon dioxide-containing gas at a cathode of an electrolytic cell comprising a membrane electrode assembly that includes a bipolar membrane separating anode from the cathode. A support layer containing water is located between the bipolar membrane and the cathode. An electrical potential difference between the cathode and the anode of the membrane electrode assembly catalytically reduces the carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide or other useful chemical. The backing layer facilitates stable operation at higher current densities. |
