abstract The invention relates to a lithium positive electrode active material intermediate comprising less than 10 wt% spinel phase and a net chemical composition of Li x Mn 2 O 4-δ , wherein: 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.1; and 0.88 ≤ δ, and has been heat treated in an atmosphere with less than 500 ppm O 2 at a temperature of between 300ºC and 1200ºC. The invention 5 further relates to a process for the preparation of a lithium positive electrode active material for a secondary battery where the cathode is fully or partially operated at voltages between 3.5 V and 4.3 V vs. Li/Li+, said process comprising the steps of: a) Heat treat- ing starting materials comprising lithium and manganese in an atmosphere with less than 500 ppm O2 at a temperature of between 300ºC and 1200ºC to obtain a lithium 10 positive electrode active material intermediate; b) Heat treating the lithium positive electrode active material intermediate of step a. in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of between 500ºC and 1200ºC. The mass of the product of step b. increases by at least 0.25 % compared to the mass of the product of step a.
