abstract Improved fire retardant compositions, methods of making such compositions, and wood and other cellulosic products treated with such compositions which comprise a major amount of boric acid and a minor amount of (a) one or more synergist materials which, with boric acid, enhance the fire retardant properties of treated products as compared to boric acid or the synergist alone, and (b) optionally, one or more solubilizers which increase the water solubility of boric acid. The compositions are of substantially neutral pH and do not cause metal corrosion or acid hydrolysis of treated products.
