Production and use of thickened sludges of synthetic amorphous silicic acid or bentonite in water as a fire extinguishing and protection agent in which the water is mixed with preferably 1 to 7 % wt. synthetic amorphous silicic acid and the resultant thin fluid suspension is rapidly thickened by the addition of a small proportion of polyethylene glycols of molar mass of 700 or more or of polyoxyethylene fatty alcohol ethers, fatty acid esters, polyoxyethylene sucrose alcohol fatty acid esters or polyethylene imine, or said substances are premixed and then intensively mixed with water so that the aforementioned percentage weights are attained, or the aforementioned minor additives are dissolved in water in suitable quantities and the silicic acid is added in solid form. The use of this thickened water preparation can, for instance be used as a fire extinguishing agent in ordinary extinguishers or in the form of fire protection cushions, for instance, to prevent fire propagation. |
