titleOfInvention Two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine
abstract A two-stroke cycle internal combustion engine (10) having a cylinder (21) with a piston (41) within the cylinder (21) defining a combustion chamber (48), as well as a charging chamber (49). Radial inlet ports (31) formed in the cylinder wall (21) are opened to the charging chamber (49) when the piston (41) passes through its top dead center position. Radial exhaust ports (33) also formed in the cylinder wall (21) are opened to the combustion chamber (48) as the piston (41) passes through its bottom dead center position. An axial valve port (46) is formed in the crown (45) of the piston (41) to communicate between the charging chamber (49) and the combustion chamber (48). An operating rod (51) mounted in the cylinder has a valve head (55) formed on its inner end to close the valve port (46). When the piston (41) approaches its bottom dead center position, the operating rod (51) disengages from the crown (45) of the piston (41) to open the valve port (46) and admit a charge from the charging chamber (49) to the combustion chamber (48).
