titleOfInvention | Gas detection, identification and elemental and quantitative analysis system |
abstract | A system is provided for measuring individual concentrations of compounds or components in solid, liquid, or in gaseous mixtures for respective gas detection. The system includes an open-ended central solid electrolyte tube, having a gas inlet for the inflow and throughflow of a gaseous mixture containing the gas to be detected. That tube is formed of an oxide of a tetravalent element, e.g., zirconia, thoria or hafnia, preferably zirconia, doped with an oxide of an element having a valence less than four, e.g., yttria, lime or magnesia, preferably yttria. An inner electrode band is provided around the inner surface of the central solid electrolyte tube, the inner electrode band being electrically connected to a first electrically-conductive output lead. An outer electrode is provided on the outer surface of the central solid electrolyte tube, the outer electrode band being electrically connected to a second electrically-conductive output lead. An open-ended annular outer tube is concentrically disposed around the central tube, the outer tube having a gas inlet for the inflow and through-flow of a carrier and reference gas, and having a gas outflow. The outer annular tube is formed of a non-conductive, non-porous material, e.g., quartz. A heater surrounds the outer annular tube at the region of the electrode bands to maintain the electrode-solid electrolyte interface at a selected temperature. Finally, an electrometer or an emitter-follower circuit, etc. is provided for measuring both voltage and current values from the output leads to enable detection and/or identification, and/or measuring individual concentrations of the compound, component or gas. |
