Emulsion running mode for a diesel engine |
abstract |
An emulsion running mode is disclosed for a diesel engine whereby the diesel engine can be switched as required to run on emulsion, using a water/diesel emulsion produced upstream of the injection pump, or on diesel, using water-free diesel oil. The engine runs on diesel when running at low speed and with a low load, and on emulsion at high speed and with high load. Small reserves of pure diesel and of emulsion are provided near the inlet of the injection pump; when the engine is switched from emulsion to diesel or vice versa, the injection pump is flushed with at least a portion of the diesel or emulsion reserve, as appropriate. By this means, the emulsion reserve is topped up with emulsion residue drawn off from the injection pump return flow during flushing with diesel, and the diesel oil reserve is similarly topped up with diesel residue drawn off from the injection pump return flow during flushing with emulsion. |
