abstract Multilayered interference pigments are composed of a transparent substrate material coated with alternating layers of metal oxides with low and high refraction indexes. The layers of metal oxide with a low refraction index are optically inactive. The thickness of the layers of metal oxide with a high refraction index is an integral multiple of the optical thickness required to obtain the desired interference colour. The thickness of the layers of metal oxide with a low refraction index is comprised between 1 and 20 nm.
