Methods and compositions are provided for the treatment of defects and disease involving osteoporosis, or osteopenic conditions. The methods comprise applying to the site of osteoporotic or osteopenic conditions a composition comprising an active agent, preferably from the TGF-β superfamily of proteins. The advantages of the invention include a reduction or avoidance of the severity and/or incidence of bone fractures. Also, the methods of the present invention are advantageous in that administration is local, rather than systemic. |
