Role of Associate and Senior Editor

Role of the Associate Editor

Once an article is accepted, the corresponding author (only one person if there is more than one corresponding author) is invited to become an Associate Editor of JAD with a one-year term beginning January 1st of the following calendar year. Associate Editors are given free access to the online content of the journal for the length of their terms but are not exempt from publication fees. An Associate Editor can extend the one-year term in yearly increments by performing Acts of Service (defined below) for JAD. These Acts of Service ensure that our editors are always actively engaged in directing the journal’s future. The goal is for Associate Editors to solicit interesting work they see at meetings, etc. and have the manuscript submitted through them (see figure, Track 1: Review Process). This has the further goal that work in JAD reflects the breadth of our Associate Editors' interests, not just the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor(s), Specialty Editor(s), or Senior Editors.

To accept or decline an invitation to join the Editorial board of JAD, please reply to the Editor who sent the decision letter/invitation with a cc to our Managing Editor, [email protected]. Include the manuscript number in your subject line.

One year extension*

Publishing a commentary in JAD (must be solicited or pre-approved by the Editor)

One year extension*

One year extension*

Guest editing a Supplemental Issue for JAD (more info at http://www.j-alz.com/supplemental)

One year extension only (extensions are not granted for each article in the supplemental issue but Senior editorship is awarded in the subsequent year)

*While there is no limit on the number of years one can serve as an Associate Editor of JAD, multiple Acts of Service in any given year can be used to extend the term for up to two years at a time. Once this limit has been reached, additional Acts of Service will be applied to the goal of Senior editorship for that year. Therefore, extended service on the editorial board requires a continued commitment to the journal. Note: Serving as a reviewer for an article being considered for JAD (or JAD Reports) does not count as an Act of Service. Publishing in JAD Reports also does not count as an act of service. Credit for publishing an article is awarded at the time of acceptance, not at the time the article is published.

Associate Editors are also expected to participate in the voting process (in early Spring) for the yearly Alzheimer Award.

Role of the Associate Editor in the Review Process

  1. After a manuscript has been received requesting a particular Associate Editor, that Associate Editor will be invited to handle the submission. Associate Editors are asked to excuse themselves from handling a submission if a conflict makes them unable to make an impartial scientific judgment or evaluation, if they have collaborated with the authors in the past three years, if they have any professional or financial affiliations that may be perceived as a conflict of interest, or if they have a history of personal differences with the author(s). If no conflict exists, the Associate Editor is asked to invite 4-6 international experts, preferably within 2-3 days from receipt. A minimum of TWO reviewers is required for all new submissions.
  2. Once all reviews are received, the Handling Associate Editor will receive an alert from ScholarOne and should review the comments and enter a decision. Additional comments for the authors from the Handling Associate Editor can be entered in the “Comments to Author” box above the comments from the reviewers.
  3. Once the Handling Associate Editor has entered a decision, the final decision will be made by the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor, or Specialty Editor assigned to the manuscript.
  4. Handling Associate Editors will be identified on accepted manuscripts and will be awarded an extension or credit on their term (as an Act of Service) regardless of the outcome of the submission.

Determination of Senior Editor Status

To elevate to Senior Editor status, an Associate Editor must complete five (5) Acts of Service during one calendar year. Guest editing a Supplemental Issue automatically qualifies the Associate Editor for Senior editorship in the subsequent year.

Role of the Senior Editor

Senior Editors will be appointed yearly based on completion of five (5) or more Acts of Service (defined above) during one calendar year (see Determination of Senior Editor Status). Senior Editors are encouraged to solicit and handle review articles and, to maintain status as Senior Editor, must complete five (5) Acts of Service during the year. If the Senior Editor does not complete 5 acts, he or she will return to status as an Associate Editor with a term expiration as determined for an Associate Editor.

Senior Editors are also expected to participate in the selection of the top articles from the previous year as part of the voting process for the yearly Alzheimer Award.
