World Federation for Animals becomes GASL Partner
The World Federation for Animals has recently become the latest addition to the GASL family. The organisation is a federation of 60+ NGOs working towards the recognition of animal welfare as essential for the sustainable development agenda. Their focus is integrating animal welfare into international health, food, and environmental regimes and trade and development finance rules.
On 15 May 2024, organisations from across the globe gathered in person for the first-ever General Assembly of the World Federation for Animals. Together, the Federation of 61 organisations committed to embark on a journey to ensure animal welfare is recognised as essential to the achievement of the global sustainable development agenda. We very much look forward to working together!
New Chair for the Global Agenda
After four years of strong leadership and expert guidance, GASL’s Chair Shirley Tarawali is finishing her second two-year term in November 2024. Mr. Hsin Huang has been appointed as her successor. There will be an official handover at the next Guiding Group meeting which will be held in Rome on 18-19 November 2024. The Global Agenda for sustainable livestock and the Global Dairy Platform are presenting today the main findings of their recent research on Dairy and Socio-economic Development, in occasion of the Global Dairy Platform Annual meeting which is happening today, 14 October, in Paris. The report examines relationships between dairy sector development and 97 statistical variables for 187 countries and territories in different world regions, with representatives from low, lower middle, upper middle- and high-income economies... FAO NSA Report available now
The 2023 Annual Report of the FAO Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) has recently been published. It provides in-depth information, highlights, and stories related to FAO's work on livestock production, animal health, and One Health in 2023, including the organization of the first-ever Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation.
GASL side event at the Second Session of the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock to focus on gender issues in livestock production
GASL partners, the Government of Kenya, the Federal Office for Agriculture Switzerland (FOAG) and Anthra will host a side event at the Second Session of the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock. Dedicated to World Milk Day, Dairy Asia, the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL), the Animal Production and Health Commission in Asia and the Pacific (APHCA), the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry of Mongolia, the National Dairy Development Board of India, the Department of Livestock Development of Thailand, the BRIN-Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia, and the Dairy Association of China, have jointly organized an online event dedicated to “Dairy Asia dialogue: Organic milk production”. Transition in Management
13- 02- 2024 - GASL bids farewell to Eduardo Arce Diaz, its longtime manager, who is set to retire at the end of this month. Eduardo has commenced his end-of-contract leave and GASL expresses gratitude for his years of dedicated service and support for sustainable livestock initiatives.
Stepping in to support GASL during this transition is Camillio DeCamillis, previously known for coordinating the LEAP action network. His appointment brings optimism and continuity to the team as they navigate this change.

15-01-2024 - The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) has released its second National Beef Sustainability Assessment (NBSA), showcasing the Canadian beef sector's progress from 2014 to 2021. The assessment, covering indicators like greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity, reveals a 15% reduction in the environmental impact of producing 1 kg of beef compared to 2014. The findings of the Environmental Life Cycle Assessment results are detailed in a peer-reviewed paper in the Canadian Journal of Animal Science, highlighting the industry's commitment to sustainability.
Successful GASL regional MSP meeting in China Promotes Sustainable Development in Livestock Industry
The recently concluded Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) regional Multi-stakeholder Partnership meeting in China, hosted at the Beijing Friendship Hotel, marked a significant milestone in addressing the evolving landscape of the country's livestock industry. With over 220 attendees, the conference saw active participation from diverse sectors, including businesses, governments, NGOs, and research institutions, fostering a comprehensive dialogue on the drivers of change in the Chinese livestock sector.
