Abstract
This study attempts to investigate the self-concealment behavior of users in social networking sites from the perspective of multidimensional privacy boundaries, and also to address the research gaps in the relationships between different dimensions of privacy boundaries. Results of a survey of 246 WeChat users suggest that fluctuating or ambiguous privacy boundaries in both temporal and spatial dimensions affect users' privacy disclosure boundary, which in turn can further influence users' tendency to self-concealment. Specifically, time collapse and temporal boundary violation positively affect self-concealment through privacy control and privacy risks respectively. Identity boundary violation has a positively indirect effect through privacy risks and a negatively indirect effect through privacy control on self-concealment. Our findings provide possible solution approaches for research on the consequences of self-concealment behavior in the fields of psychology and behavioral science and provide a reference for optimizing the privacy policies of social media platforms.
