Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Quick q
editHi! Are you cloudsky? You seem to have a lot of duplicate images which both claim their own!? Palosirkka (talk) 11:21, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi there! Sorry, yes - I am developing the Upload to Commons app for an internship and some of the testing requires actual image uploads. I was using cloudyskye to do that, as my mentor asked me to create a new account for testing with some of the images that he provided me. I have minimized the number of real upload tests as far as possible, but they still exceed the number of images I have, hence the duplicates. I was intending to remove the duplicates later on so as not to clutter up the database, but unfortunately I haven't managed to get around to doing that. Should I not be doing this? I can delete the other account if required. Misaochaaan (talk) 11:30, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- If you're the copyright holder of the images in question, don't worry too much about the dupes I think. Sooner or later they will get removed. Maybe somebody else has an opinion. If you are not the copyright holder or don't have the permission, then all the images need to be removed, preferably instantly. Palosirkka (talk) 11:38, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, all the images were either taken by my phone camera, or were sent to me by my mentor with explicit permission to publish them (and they were taken by him). Sorry again for the inconvenience! Misaochaaan (talk) 11:40, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- Oh, um, I found just one image that does not qualify - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cathedral_4.jpg. How do I delete it? Misaochaaan (talk) 11:44, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- I marked it for speedy deletion. I hope we catch all of such images, otherwise you're on the hook for copyright infringement. :-/ Palosirkka (talk) 11:49, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- Well, even that image is under a free license (it's just a duplicate of a pic that already exists on Commons), but I guess it's better to remove it as I was not the original uploader. I will do my best to go through my uploads and check them - as far as I can see everything else is okay. If I find any more, can I not delete them myself? Misaochaaan (talk) 11:58, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- I noticed that but still the license requires attribution which you didn't provide, so you're in breach. And yes, you can delete them yourself. Have a nice day! Palosirkka (talk) 11:59, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- How do I delete it, please? I have been looking for a way but can't seem to find the option :/ Misaochaaan (talk) 12:01, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- One way is to insert the speedy delete template onto the page. I.e. . Palosirkka (talk) 12:08, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

Commons App is uploading images with the wrong locations.
edit@Misaochan: : The Commons app appears to be uploading images with the phone's current location, rather than the photo's EXIF location. See Hotel Hooker in Willimantic.jpg for an example; this raises the possibility that a lot of images have been uploaded with incorrect locations. grendel|khan 20:37, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi grendel|khan, thanks for the heads up! I have tested this here and it appears to be working correctly for me. A few questions to help us debug this, could you please list the steps you used to upload your image - did you go to the Android gallery and then tap "Share > Commons app", or did you upload from within the main screen of the app, etc? Also, could you please double check that your image EXIF data does indeed include geocoordinates, as I don't see them listed in the metadata section of your linked file? Thanks! Misaochan (talk) 08:07, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Misaochan: See the discussion over at the Village Pump for more details. I uploaded by going to the Google Photos app, selecting the picture, and 'Sharing to' the Commons app. It looks like due to some issues with my phone or the Photos app (I'm following up on that elsewhere), some of my pictures have attached geotags in Photos, but not in their EXIF data. (Weird!) The problem is, uploading a file with no EXIF location seems to set the location to the phone's current location. This might be reasonable for photos taken immediately via the app, but it's very wrong for uploading photos taken at some point in the past. (Among other things, this risks leaking data users didn't intend to leak, i.e., the location of their houses.) grendel|khan 16:34, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- grendel|khan thanks for linking me! I will post my response there. Misaochan (talk) 16:49, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
I agreee, some strange locations 0 0 0. But i have problem with Date as well. See here. Is it up to Snapspeed or problem in code ? --Mile (talk) 14:08, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Mile, what version of the app are you using? If it is anything other than 2.9, could you please sign up for beta testing, update the app to v2.9 and see if that fixes the problem for you? Misaochan (talk) 17:22, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Misaochan : Now it work, see here, on 2.9 seems fine. I can try location tomorrow to see, but at least didnt give any strange info on 2.9 like on 2.8.5. Maybe to set default license to CC-BY-SA 4.0 instead of 3.0. Good for now, i will see if can make any suggestion in further. Good job. --Mile (talk) 17:46, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
Problems with 2.9.0, cant upload neither from "Gallery, share,...Commons", neither if i go to Commons and select + It worked yesterday. --Mile (talk) 14:41, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Mile What happens when you try to upload? Misaochan (talk) 16:35, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Commons app screenshot on tablet.png
editThis file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Commons app screenshot on tablet.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Commons app poster for Wikimania?
editHello! I've enjoyed the "nearby" feature in the Commons app and am considering to submit a poster about Commons photo walks to Wikimania 2024, provisionally titled "Take a walk and contribute to Wikimedia Commons with the mobile app!" Any suggestions/objections? Deryck Chan (talk) 00:40, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there, happy to hear that, and it sounds like a fantastic idea to me. :) However I stepped down from the project lead role some time ago, so it might be worth contacting the current project maintainer, Kaartic about this. Cheers! Misaochan (talk) 12:32, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Josephine. I'll let you know if the poster goes ahead! Deryck Chan (talk) 14:02, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
Latest active users stats for the Commons app
editCould you upload a newer statistic, maybe as a new version for File:Commons app active installs Jul 2021.png which you could rename? I was wondering if the count of active users was still so small despite that the app apparently has more than a thousand reviews. Does it show the number of users active per day and if so do you also have a stat for users active per month?
I think there's obviously a lot of potential with this app but currently it falls extremely short of that (which is also why it probably shouldn't be linked from prominent Wikipedia pages or the WP app at this point) – not because it would be very difficult to change that or because it has many bugs, but to a large extent because one of the three key components (the other two being enabling uploads and browsing via searches/categories) is still missing: a Home feed for discovery/exploration and showing the Commons Home page (even the Wikipedia app shows a tile for "Picture of the day" but not the Commons app and because all the Main page stuff is missing it makes more sense to use the mobile website rather than the app for users, especially people new to WMC).
Moreover, it would be great if one could view the WMC leaderboards & achievements pages also on Desktop. In the documentation it should be clearer how it's calculated and I think more ways could be added (will also make a new issue for that). Please see the latest comments here.
Also pinging @Kaartic: , maybe I should have asked at your talk page or at Commons talk:Mobile app. Prototyperspective (talk) 19:04, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective You could find the recent trend here: Commons app active installs Aug 2024.
- Thank you for sharing your thoughts on how the app could be improved. Let us continue the discussion on the corresponding GitHub issues.
- PS: The Commons app talk page was indeed a better place to have this discussion :-)
