Hello, Pbsouthwood!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Nesconset FD Scuba rescue team 18346 1187699057887 6321194 n.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Diving ...

edit

Hi, I noticed that you are doing a great major clean up. One point; for you, there is a clear distinction between the various diving disciplines. But for most people, diving is basically underwater diving, so most underwater diving images will land there, as you have certainly noticed during your clean up. If jump diving is well connected to underwater diving, you have a better chance that people try to categorise it deeper/better. So categorisation is not only making splits and branches, they should be well interconnected at the various levels. --Foroa (talk) 13:43, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Foroa, this is a problem I am trying to work around by defining the difference in the category pages to encourage people to categorise correctly. I know it will not work most of the time, but I don't see how connecting the two "officially" will help. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 13:53, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Its simple: most of the underwater diving stuff was in diving categories, so naturally, that's where they will arrive. You can define cats, add texts and warnings; most people don't check categories: if it is blue, it's fine. In most languages, the terms diving and submarine diving are different words that are generally translated to diving in English. We would probably have much less problems if we could say that the standard meaning for diving is underwater diving, and the other for example jump diving, but that's the way it is. And though, in terms of discipline, diving and underwater diving have not a lot in common, logically, they belong together (and share water, swimming, people, leisure, ...). --Foroa (talk) 14:31, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
OK, I will leave it to you to connect the categories where you think best. I will move the files to the better category when I find them, if that is a reasonable compromise? Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 14:40, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thank you, I am just more thinking on maintenance. If you observe category histories, you will see that underwater diving cats have been created many years later than the corresponding diving cats. --Foroa (talk) 15:31, 10 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
While you insist on clearly separating underwater diving from diving, you mix yourself by using terms like "Standard diving equipment", "Diving maps of ..." that are associated with underwater diving. Just to show how difficult it is to keep them separated. --Foroa (talk) 16:14, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
It is problematic, and I know I have contributed towards the ambiguous categories. When it looks feasible, I try to correct this. However, Standard diving equipment is a technical term for a specific kind of underwater diving equipment, and naming it something else would not be appropriate. I recategorise the images related to underwater diving as I work mostly on that subject on Wikipedia, and mostly on recreational dive sites and guides on Wikivoyage. Sometimes I look for a picture to illustrate an article I am working on, and if it is difficult to find, I try to recategorise a bit to make it easier next time. I am not am expert on commons categories, but have been in the recreational and commercial diving field for about 30 years. Still on the learning curve. Hi!

On my talk page you asked for a suitable name for two of the banners I've uploaded.

File:Banneriecavasouthlatvia.jpg - It depicts typical Latvian countryside, it's taken at a campsite near the small village of Iecava in southern Latvia. "Banner countryside near Iecava" maybe?

File:Bannerbayernauinderhallertau.jpg - It's the clock tower of the church in the village of Au in der Hallertau. BTW now I remember that I did actually upload that picture File:Au church.JPG to WT shared but never used it anywhere. How about "Banner Au church clock tower"?

Banners wy-pt

edit

I found this somewhat oppressive action, and you moved to a category that does not follow any pattern within Wikimedia Commons, more than that, you disassociated images of Wikivoyage when you not categorized the "Pt: Wikivoyage banners" as a category within Wikivoyage. One more point, I'll make that clear, because for several volunteers Wikivoyage it did not make sense yet: Communities are independent and separated by language! So there is no default, and what prevents a voluntary change something, an then it becomes to be the standard? Who sets the standard? The communities are horizontal, and all volunteers have equal weight, independent of anything.
It is a tip, next time you do something like that, before making, communicate the person who created that. Peace! Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton (talk) 21:05, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rodrigo, Replied on your talk page. Sorry for the categorizing error. New category now where I think it should be, in Wikivoyage banners. This was a simple error of not saving a category change. If the new category is still not satifactory, please let me know. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 11:21, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

India banners filename move

edit

Hi, You recently moved atleast 22 of the wikivoyage banner files that I had uploaded/changed with perfectly harmonized set of filenames. Your action was unilateral without caring so much as to even inform me apriori. That's okay but in a few cases, the moves have resulted in absurd filenames like File:Tinsuki banner.jpg when there is no place like Tinsuki. It's Tinsukia. Also, File:Vadodara banner Palace.jpg. It should either have been "Vadodara banner" or "Vadodara Palace banner." Believe me, I take great care to ensure that files I upload are named correctly. I request to you to consider reverting your moves atleast for the files that I uploaded. In the event that your move was to harmonize all the wikivoyage banners, do you think such control is feasible/worthwhile as the number of banners increase? All in good faith. ~ Rahul Bott (talk) 08:13, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Also reply on your talk page on en:Wikivoyage. Yes I am trying to harmonize all the Wikivoyage banners, I am about halfway. Whether it is worthwhile or feasible is yet to be seen, but I hope so. And thank you for the care you have taken with naming. Regards, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 13:33, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Underwater diving sites vs. Recreational dive sites using

edit

Hi Pbsouthwood, where is the discussion about the differences between these two categories? I don't undestand the difference, especcially concerning your changes in Category:Similan Islands‎. This is a snorkelling ("Recreational"?) and apnoe ("Underwater"?) diving site as well. Can you explain it, please? Thanks and regards, --Emha (talk) 07:52, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Most dive sites listed will be recreational dive sites. Other categories (not yet existing) would be diver training sites and scientific/archaeological sites. Other professional diving sites tend to move with the job and would be unlikely to be mentioned as specific dive sites, but salvage and oil rig operations might eventually have specific commercial diving sites associated. Any form of underwater diving that is done for purposes of recreation tends to be done repetitively at sites which are known to be suitable for the purpose. This includes recreational and technical scuba, snuba, snorkelling and free-diving (apnea). If you don't agree with this categorization, what alternative would you suggest?
I will try to define the differences on the category pages. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:15, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

edit

I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask, different images have been uploaded by different users. Assuming you are, however, I was wondering if it was possible for you to take this image and zoom into the area east of the Rocky Mountains and upload that image here to Commons. The reason I ask is because us over in WikiProject Severe Weather have begun to plot tornado tracks, but need a map that is zoomed in enough to see individual plots. – TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 20:53, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Category:Tosia_(genus)

edit

Category:Tosia_(genus) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Dear Peter Southwood, I'm currently writing a popular science book about the evolution of locomotion, to be published next year by Basic Books. I would very much like to include your wonderful <Box jellyfish at Bakoven Rock DSC11031.JPG> image: may I ask how you would like the work to be attributed? Many thanks, and best wishes, Matt Wilkinson

Hi Matt, My name will be sufficient. Either as Peter Southwood or P B Southwood. Either at the photo or in a list of credits for photographs, whichever suits the layout best. I would appreciate a link to information about the book once it has been published, which you can post here or mail to me via the link in the left margin. The species is Carybdea branchi Gershwin & Gibbons, 2009. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 19:37, 22 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much Peter - I will send over the relevant information once the book is published. Best wishes, Matt

Thanks for uploading File:US Navy 1943 250ft Air Treatment Table.svg.

Thank you.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!

edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Pbsouthwood,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks for uploading File:Nesconset FD Scuba rescue team 12434 1253208724628 259393 n.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Important message for file movers

edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
