User talk:XN
Hi XN, I noticed you uploaded two versions of this image. I'm pretty sure they're the same? Just so you know, the MediaWiki software automatically scales all images, so it's not necessary to upload "thumbnails". :) lovely image, BTW. I love symmetry. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:21, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi pfctdayelise, these are different versions. I'd tried one version for the featured pictures. One user comes with the idea of symmetry. I'd rotated the original a bit and have done a little crop for the file in the symmetry category. Regards --XN 07:27, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Re: wallpapers
[edit]Hey XN. Glad you like the idea. :) You'll no doubt hear from me again before they're finalised. I added your suggestion for the flowers. It seems a bit "busy" to me, plus that big blurry square on the right, but I haven't tested any out as actual wallpapers yet. That's one of the next steps. If you want, you can help me choose. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 21:53, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- This works fine on my desktop - the blurry regions are good counterparts for these "busy" ones ;) I don't think that I have enough time left to test some of the other wallpapers. But if I have, I will report you. --XN 09:24, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Nice picture!
[edit]I really like the picture Image:XN Centaurea cyanus 00.jpg. Good compositon and nice colorplacement... Chrizz 19:03, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks :) ! Though the color is a bit tricky... I saw this pretty barleycorn field from far because of the bright blue aspect. Unfortunately the sun disappears behind some clouds in the same moment. Too bad! Soon I can upload an overview picture of this aspect. Regards --XN 19:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
An invitation
[edit]I noticed that you have reviewed FP pictures and are asking if you could assist in the developement of Commons:Quality Images. and associated pages Commons:Quality images candidates ; Commons:Quality images guidelines thankyou Gnangarra 14:28, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your invitation. Currently I havn't enough time to contribute to another project, I'm sorry. Further on, I am not a professional and have to learn these guidelines by myself ;) Regards --XN 12:58, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

POTY 2006
[edit]The arrangements for the Commons Picture of the Year 2006 competition are now complete, and voting will start tomorrow, Feb 1st. All the featured pictures promoted last year are automatically nominated. As the creator of one or more images nominated for the election we invite you to participate in the event. Hi,
your photograph doesn't show a howerfly (afaik not even a fly). This is more likely a bee. --XN 02:52, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for noting. You are right, of course, Lycaon already noted it must be a solitary bee. But it is not convenient to alter the file name now because the picture is in COM:FPC - Alvesgaspar 07:40, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:24, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Bildverwendung
--XN (talk) 01:06, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Location?
[edit]Hi XN - nice audio files of birds (like this one), but their value would be greatly improved if you could add the locations where they were recorded. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 10:59, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi MPF, could you point to an example, how to do this best? Thanks --XN (talk) 20:56, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hi XN - thanks! There's two ways to do it; one is simply to give the name of the location in the description (e.g. |Description=
- the other, if you have the exact location and are happy for this to be widely known, is to use the format 53.24134, entering the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees. Obviously, don't use this for very rare birds where it might give the birds unwelcome attention!
- For an example file using both, look at File:Lagopus lagopus scotica Hawsen Burn 2.jpg (a picture file, but it makes no difference in the formatting).
- Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 22:58, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
