General Sir Charles Warren, GCMG, KCB, FRS (7 February 1840 – 21 January 1927) was an officer in the British Royal Engineers. He was one of the earliest European archaeologists of the Biblical Holy Land, and particularly of the Temple Mount. Much of his military service was spent in British South Africa. Previously he was police chief, the head of the London Metropolitan Police, from 1886 to 1888 during the Jack the Ripper murders. His command in combat during the Second Boer War was criticised, but he achieved considerable success during his long life in his military and civil posts.

  • Charles Warren (1840-1927) fue un militar y arqueólogo británico que ingresó a los 17 años al Real Cuerpo de Ingenieros donde desarrolló una meteórica carrera. Entre 1867 y 1870, el entonces joven capitán Warren realizó numerosas exploraciones en la región de Palestina, las cuales son las bases del conocimiento de la topografía de la antigua Jerusalén y de la arqueología de la zona. Durante la década de 1870 fue enviado al sur de África, hasta que en 1880 retornó al Reino Unido. En 1882 volvió a África, donde participó en las acciones británicas de reclamación del territorio conocido como Bechuanalandia, y tuvo bajo su mando a la guarnición de Suakim (1886). Ese último año fue nombrado jefe de la Policía Metropolitana en Reino Unido, cargo que desempeñó durante dos años. Al año siguiente comandó las tropas británicas coloniales en Singapur durante cinco años. Con el grado de teniente general durante la guerra anglo-bóer, Warren comandó la 5.ª División de la Fuerza Sudafricana. Su derrota en Spion Kop desató una fuerte controversia sobre sus habilidades militares, pero en la posterior ofensiva en Natal tuvo éxito al lograr cruzar el río Tugela y capturar la posición de Pieters Hill, estratégica ubicación que posibilitó la posterior liberación de la asediada ciudad británica de Ladysmith. Al finalizar la guerra, Warren ocupó importantes cargos administrativos en la Colonia de El Cabo.
