- The eighth generation (Generation VIII) of the Pokémon franchise features 96 fictional species of creatures introduced to the core video game series, including 89 in the 2019 Nintendo Switch games Pokémon Sword and Shield as of version 1.3.0 and 7 further species introduced in the 2022 Nintendo Switch game Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The Pokémon Sword and Shield starter Pokémon were the first Pokémon of the generation to be revealed on February 27, 2019. A notable change in the eighth generation compared to previous ones is that, new Pokémon and forms were introduced via game patches rather than new games. (en)

Chaque Pokémon possède deux noms officiels en japonais : l'un en katakana (entre parenthèses) — sa transcription Hepburn pouvant être vue en passant la souris sur le nom japonais — et un autre en rōmaji, utilisé en tant que marque commerciale (en italique). En Occident, le nom français des Pokémon est utilisé en France, en Belgique, en Suisse et au Québec tandis que le nom anglais est utilisé dans le reste du monde, à l'exception de l'Allemagne, la Corée du Sud et la Chine. - L'ottava generazione dei videogiochi della serie Pokémon comprende i titoli Pokémon Spada e Scudo, commercializzati su Nintendo Switch a partire dal 15 novembre 2019. Essa introduce un nuovo gruppo di 96 Pokémon, portando il numero totale a 905. Anche in questa generazione sono presenti le forme regionali — chiamate forme di Galar — di alcuni Pokémon appartenenti alle generazioni precedenti, ma oltre ad avere aspetto e tipo differente, le forme di Galar possono avere anche delle evoluzioni inedite. Le forme regionali introdotte in Spada e Scudo sono 14: Meowth, Ponyta, Rapidash, Slowpoke, Farfetch'd, Weezing, Mr. Mime, Corsola, Zigzagoon, Linoone, Darumaka, Darmanitan, Yamask e Stunfisk. Alcuni Pokémon sono stati introdotti in seguito al lancio del gioco, tra cui Kubfu, Calyrex e le forme regionali di Slowbro e Slowking inclusi nei contenuti scaricabili L'isola solitaria dell'armatura e Le terre innevate della corona, distribuiti rispettivamente il 17 giugno e il 23 ottobre 2020. Lo sviluppo concettuale delle creature dell'ottava generazione iniziò nel 2016, al termine del periodo di creazione dei titoli Pokémon Sole e Luna e durò all'incirca un anno. Dato che la regione di Galar è ispirata alla Gran Bretagna, i nuovi Pokémon sono stati progettati traendo ispirazione dalla fauna, dal folclore e dalla mitologia britannica. I Pokémon leggendari Zacian e Zamazenta sono creature dalle sembianze di lupi, disegnati partendo dai numerosi lupi che appaiono nella mitologia inglese. La definizione dell'aspetto dei Pokémon iniziali è invece ruotata intorno all'area in cui sarebbero stati incontrati dal giocatore. (it)
