- جورج أبراهام مقدسي هو مستشرق أمريكي من أصول لبنانية ولد في مدينة ديترويت بولاية ميشيغان في 15 مايو 1920. توفي في مديا، بنسلفانيا، في 6 سبتمبر 2002. كان أستاذا للدراسات الشرقية. درس أولاً في الولايات المتحدة، ثم في لبنان. ثم تخرج عام 1964 في فرنسا من جامعة باريس السوربون. درس في جامعتي ميشيغان وهارفارد قبل أن يصبح أستاذ اللغة العربية في جامعة بنسلفانيا عام 1973. شغل منصب مدير قسم الدراسات الشرقية حتى تقاعده عام 1990. أصبح أستاذاً فخرياً في «الدراسات العربية والإسلامية» في جامعة بنسلفانيا في فيلادلفيا. كان جورج مقدسي مهتمًا بشكل خاص بقضايا التعليم العالي في العالم. نشر أعمال أبو الوفاء بن عقيل، الواضع في أصول الفقه، في ثلاثة مجلدات، نشره شتاينر فيرلاغ في شتوتغارت ، وأعاد طبعه كلاوس شوارتز. وجزء من كتاب الفنون في مجلدين، طبع في بيروت 1970-1971.كان عضوًا وعضوًا فخريًا في العديد من المنظمات العلمية المهنية. من بينها كان زمالة غوغنهايم مرتين. في عام 1977 شغل منصب رئيس جمعية دراسات الشرق الأوسط في أمريكا الشمالية، ومقرها الآن في توسان (أريزونا). - George Abraham Makdisi was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 15, 1920. He died in Media, Pennsylvania, on September 6, 2002. He was a professor of oriental studies. He studied first in the United States, and later in Lebanon. He then graduated in 1964 in France from the Paris-Sorbonne University. He taught in the University of Michigan and Harvard University before reaching the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, as a professor of Arabic. Here he remained until his retirement in 1990, when he held the post of director of the Department of Oriental Studies. He became a Professor Emeritus of "Arab and Islamic Studies" in the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He was particularly interested in issues around higher education in the world. He published an Arabic edition of the work by IBN AQIL, Al-Wāḍiḥ fi Usul al-fiqh (The Obvious in the Principles of Jurisprudence), in three volumes, published in Stuttgart, Germany by Steiner Verlag and reprinted by . He published an Arabic edition of a portion of IBN AQIL's huge work, Kitab al-Funun, 2 vols., printed in Beirut 1970-71. He was a member and honorary member of numerous professional scientific organizations. Among other honors, he was twice a Guggenheim fellow. In 1977, he served as the President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America, now based in Tucson, Arizona, United States. (en)
- George Abraham Makdisi (Detroit, 15 maggio 1920 – Media, 6 settembre 2002) è stato un orientalista e storico statunitense.Professore Emerito di "Studi arabi e islamici" nella University of Pennsylvania a Philadelphia, si formò dal punto di vista della preparazione scolastica e universitaria dapprima negli Stati Uniti e poi in Libano, per laurearsi poi nel 1964 in Francia, nella parigina Sorbona. Insegnò nella University of Michigan e ad Harvard prima di raggiungere la University of Pennsylvania nel 1973, come professore di "Arabo". Qui rimase fino al pensionamento nel 1990, quando ricopriva la carica di direttore del Dipartimento di Studi Orientali. Particolarmente interessato al tema dell'istruzione superiore nel mondo islamico classico, fu attento studioso anche del dotto hanbalita Ibn ʿAqīl, reso noto dal suo lavoro al-Wāḍiḥ fī uṣūl al-fiqh, che Makdisi pubblicò in tre volumi, editi a Stoccarda dalla Steiner Verlag. Era socio onorario di numerose organizzazioni scientifiche professionali. È morto a 82 anni a Media (Pennsylvania). (it)
