- José Ramon Fernández, primer «Marqués de La Esperanza», (San Juan, 1808 - Manatí, 1883), va ser un empresari porto-riqueny del sucre i un dels homes més poderosos del Carib espanyol. Va posseir una plantació de gairebé 2.300 acres a la costa del nord de Puerto Rico i un molí sucrer amb un avançat motor de vapor. La seva riquesa i les connexions polítiques li van permetre convèncer el govern colonial espanyol a l'illa de Puerto Rico per a dividir el municipi de Manatí en dos, i així fundar el municipi de Barceloneta. La màquina de vapor de la «Hacienda La Esperanza» fou designada com a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Avui aquesta propietat sencera pertany a la «Puerto Rico Conservation Trust», que s'encarrega de la seva protecció i conservació, juntament amb el bosc costaner de la regió. (ca)
- José Ramon Fernández, 1st Marquis of La Esperanza (1808–1883), was the wealthiest sugar baron in Puerto Rico in the 19th century. He was also one of the most powerful men of the entire Spanish Caribbean. He owned an immense plantation of nearly 2300 acres on the northern coast of Puerto Rico, and a sugar mill with an advanced steam engine. His wealth and political connections gave him the power to convince the Spanish Colonial government in the island to split the municipality of Manati in two, and thus found the municipality of Barceloneta. The Hacienda La Esperanza steam engine has been designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Today the entire property is owned by the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, which preserves and protects it, including some of the only coastal forest left in the region. (en)
