- Colonel H. H. Shri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II, Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, GCSI GBE (10 September 1872 – 2 April 1933), often known as Ranji or K. S. Ranjitsinhji, was the ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar from 1907 to 1933, as Maharaja Jam Saheb, and a noted Test cricketer who played for the English cricket team. He also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University, and county cricket for Sussex. Ranji has widely been regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of his era. Neville Cardus described him as "the Midsummer night's dream of cricket". Unorthodox in technique and with fast reactions, he brought a new style to batting and revolutionised the game. Previously, batsmen had generally pushed forward; Ranji took advantage of the improving quality of pitches in his era and played more on the back foot, both in defence and attack. He is particularly associated with one shot, the leg glance, which he invented or popularised. The first-class cricket tournament in India, the Ranji Trophy, was named in his honour and inaugurated in 1935 by the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. His nephew Duleepsinhji followed Ranji's path as a batsman playing first-class cricket in England and for the England cricket team. Away from cricket, Ranji became Maharaja Jam Saheb of Nawanagar in 1907. He was later Chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes, and represented India at the League of Nations. (en)

Il effectua sa carrière sportive en Angleterre en tant que batteur, principalement avec le Sussex County Cricket Club, et disputa quinze test-matchs avec l'équipe d'Angleterre entre 1896 et 1902. Il étudia à l'université de Rajkot, puis rejoignit l'Angleterre, d'abord à Harrow puis à Cambridge, où il débuta en first-class cricket en 1893. Il fut sélectionné l'année suivante en équipe d'Angleterre et occupa le poste de capitaine du Sussex entre 1899 et 1903. Fin 1904, il rentra en Inde et revint à plusieurs reprises disputer des saisons complètes ou partielles avec le Sussex, jusqu'en 1920. Il fut l'un des meilleurs batteurs de son époque, même si sa technique à la batte était peu orthodoxe ; il popularisa notamment de nouveaux coups. Les subtilités de sa technique « devinrent sa marque de fabrique jusque dans les pages du célèbre magazine Vanity Fair, où il apparut comme un homme mystérieux et insondable, un joueur élancé, timide et parfois capricieux ». Devenu Maharajah Jam Sahib de Nawagar, un petit État d'Inde de l'ouest, en 1907, il représenta notamment l'Inde auprès de la Société des Nations. Il fut également chancelier de la . Sa capacité à passer du sport à un rôle de dirigeant politique (même si à bien des égards sa gestion du Nawanagar ne fut pas pertinente) fut à l'époque interprétée comme la confirmation que le cricket constituait une école pertinente pour les élites. Par son parcours, Ranji fait figure de symbole de la compatibilité des élites indiennes avec la domination impériale britannique telle qu'elle s'exerça dans le sous-continent, un représentant d'un âge d'or du cricket amateur qui contribua à bâtir l'Empire.
