- لواء بحري أو أميرال خلفي أوRear admiral هو ضابط يحمل رتبة عقيد في سلاح البحرية يحمل رتبة أعلى من العميد والنقيب، ورتبة ادنى من اللواء أي نائب أميرال. يُعتبر عمومًا أدنى صفوف «الأدميرال». في العديد من القوات البحرية تتكون شارة الرتبة التي يحملها من نجمتين. نشأت من أيام الأسراب البحرية ويمكن أن تجد أصولها تنبع من البحرية الملكية. يخصص لكل أميرال سرب بحري يتولى امر قيادته وإدارة شؤونه من سفينة مركزية. ويساعد الأدميرال نائب أميرال برتبة لواء، الذي يتولى السفن الرائدة التي تتحمل العبء الأكبر من المعارك البحرية. في الجزء الخلفي من السرب البحري، سيتولى أميرال ثالث قيادة السفن المتبقية، وبما أن قيادة هذا الجزء من السرب يعتبر الأقل خطورة فإن الأدميرال الذي يقوده سيكون الأصغر بين الأدميرالات. في بعض الأساطيل الأوروبية (مثل فرنسا) تُعرف رتبة العقيد البحري باسم Contre-amiral. أما في البحرية الألمانية فتُعرف الرتبة بكونتريميرال، وتعتبر رتبة أعلى من رتبة أدميرال الأسطول. في البحرية الملكية الهولندية، تُعرف هذه الرتبة باسم schout-bij-nacht (مشرف أثناء الليل). - Rear admiral is a senior naval flag officer rank, equivalent to a major general and air vice marshal and above that of a commodore and captain, but below that of a vice admiral. It is regarded as a two star "admiral" rank. It is often regarded as a two-star rank with a NATO code of OF-7. The term originated in the days of naval sailing squadrons and can trace its origins to the Royal Navy. Each naval squadron was assigned an admiral as its head, who commanded from the centre vessel and directed the squadron's activities. The admiral would in turn be assisted by a vice admiral, who commanded the lead ships that bore the brunt of a battle. In the rear of the squadron, a third admiral commanded the remaining ships and, as this section was considered to be in the least danger, the admiral in command of it was typically the most junior. This has continued into the modern age, with rear admiral the most junior admiralty of many navies. In most European navies, the equivalent rank is called counter admiral. (en)
- Quello di retroammiraglio (talvolta scritto anche come retro ammiraglio o retro-ammiraglio) è un grado militare in vigore presso svariate marine militari del mondo. Nella Marina Militare Italiana il grado omologo è quello di contrammiraglio (OF-6) o ammiraglio di divisione (OF-7). Il nome deriva dall'uso originario di assegnare a quest'ufficiale il comando della retroguardia, da cui appunto retroammiraglio, con un ruolo quindi contrapposto a quello dell'ammiraglio, responsabile della condotta dell'azione, e del viceammiraglio, comandante dell'avanguardia. Con il tempo il titolo di retroammiraglio si è trasformato in quello di contrammiraglio, terminologia adottata generalmente da tutte le marine, mentre nei paesi anglosassoni e del Commonwealth tuttora il grado corrispondente a contrammiraglio è rear admiral, letteralmente "ammiraglio di retroguardia". De naam is ontstaan als titel voor de bevelhebber die de manoeuvres van de van het eskader coördineerde.
