- Vexacions és una obra per a piano composta per Erik Satie el 1893. Al principi de la partitura el compositor va escriure aquesta nota: «Per tocar-se 840 vegades seguides aquest motiu, serà bo preparar-se prèviament, i en el major silenci, per immobilitats serioses» L'obra (de forma A - A1 - A - A2) és una repetició d'un motiu únic A i les seves harmonitzacions A1, A2 tocades 840 vegades seguides sense parar. El tempo es llegeix Molt lent sense indicació metronòmica. L'execució completa de l'obra pot variar entre catorze i vint-i-quatre hores, segons el tempo adoptat per l'o pels intèrprets. El compositor americà John Cage (1912 - 1992) va ser el primer a iniciar una interpretació integral de l'obra, deu pianistes rellevant-se per tocar-la durant més de 18 hores, el 1963 a Nova York. L'obra exercitarà sobre els minimalistes un cert atractiu, amb execucions en les quals participarà Meredith Monk el 1966, o Gavin Bryars i a Leicester el 1971. La primera execució integral a Europa per un sol pianista, (més conegut per ser un intèrpret especialista de les ones Martenot, de l'harmònica de vidre i del , va tenir lloc el juny de 1984, a la Galeria d'art Jade a Colmar (França). Va durar 24 hores (de migdia al migdia). El mateix pianista va reinterpretar les Vexacions al petit estudi on va viure Erik Satie, carrer Cortot (Montmartre), a París, el 21 de juny de 1985 (de mitjanit a mitjanit), en la invitació de la Fundació Erik Satie i de la seva presidenta, Ornella Volta. El va interpretar encara integralment, sempre durant 24 hores, en el moment del Holland Festival a Amsterdam, el 1988, a l'American Hotel, en presència de John Cage a qui el Festival era consagrat aquell any. Entre les interpretacions integrals més recents, cal citar sobretot la interpretada a la Ciutat de la música el 8 de febrer de 2009 entre les 8 hores i 3 h 15 del matí, per 21 pianistes succeint-se al costat de d'Alexandre Tharaud. - Vexations (Trápení) je minimalistické hudební dílo francouzského skladatele Erika Satieho určené pro klavír. Rok jeho vzniku není přesně znám, obvykle je řazen do roku 1893. Vexations byly vydány až v roce 1969 vydavatelstvím Max Eschig s dvěma dalšími náčrtky pod názvem Pages mystiques (Mystické stránky, 1893–95). Jde o tři „sebrané fragmenty z Národních Archivů“ a zásluhu na jejich vydání má editor většiny Satieho díla Robert Caby. Podle některých životopisců by bylo bývalo lepší, kdyby většinu ze všech zveřejněných náčrtů „nechal Caby dál v archivech spát…“Fascinaci způsobil Satieho přípis ke skladbě, v němž se doslova týče: „Pro hru tohoto motivku 840krát bude dobré se nejprve dobře připravita hrát jej v ještě větším tichu s vážnou nehybností.“'' Přes proslulost tohoto přípisu byly vzneseny i výhrady k oprávněnosti realizace takového záměru, neboť Satie byl po celý svůj tvůrčí život pověstný výraznou literární rovinou svých partitur a mnohé skladby nesou podobně básnicko-metaforické přípisy jako Vexations, aniž by je interpreti brali doslova. Fráze Vexations trvají něco přes minutu a strukturálně je v nich zjevná práce s dvanáctitónovým totálem předznamenávající Schoenbergovu dodekafonii. Vexations se esteticky hodily americké druhé avantgardě a začaly být prováděny na rozličných koncertech v USA od konce padesátých let 20. století. Jejich celková délka se podle zvoleného tempa pohybuje od 12 to 24 hodin. Jedno z provedení Vexations bylo realizováno Johnem Cagem v Pocket Theatre v New Yorku v září 1963 za pomoci dvanácti pianistů a mělo podobu performance. Mezi pianisty byly známé osobnosti tehdejší avantgardy jako David Tudor, Christian Wolff, Philip Corner, David Del Tredici, James Tenney, Joshua Rifkin a další. Roku 2017 proběhlo v newyorském Guggenheimově muzeu další kompletní přehrání díla, kterého se účastnili mimo jiné čtyři klavíristé, kteří hráli i při jeho prvním uvedení v roce 1963 – Christian Wolff, Philip Corner, David Del Tredici a Joshua Rifkin. Téhož roku skladba zazněla také v rámci brněnského festivalu Moravský podzim, při němž se v hraní díla vystřídalo patnáct klavíristů. V roce 2009 vydal belgický klavírista album 42 Vexations, na kterém ve zkrácené podobě toto dílo rovněž zahrál. (cs)

Es handelt sich um eines der ersten Beispiele für ein repetitives Arrangement sowie für Atonalität in der Kunstmusik und wird allgemein als eines der längsten Stücke der Musikgeschichte überhaupt angesehen, obwohl die Partitur nur aus einer Seite besteht. Vermutlich gehört Vexations zu Saties Werkreihe Pages Mystique, auch wenn dies nicht gesichert ist. Das Stück, das wahrscheinlich 1893 komponiert wurde, besteht aus einem Thema und zwei Variationen. Zur Art und Weise der Realisation gab Satie den eigenwilligen Rat: Um dieses Motiv achthundertvierzigmal zu spielen, wird es gut sein, sich darauf vorzubereiten, und zwar in größter Stille, mit ernster Regungslosigkeit. Da kaum Hinweise auf die Entstehungsgeschichte des Werks existieren und Satie es auch nie in seinen (erhaltenen) Briefen erwähnte, ist die musikalische Einordnung bis heute umstritten, es wird bisweilen auch als musikalischer Scherz des Komponisten bezeichnet. The theme and its accompanying chords are written using enharmonic notation. The piece is undated, but scholars usually assign a date around 1893–1894 on the basis of musical and biographical evidence. The piece bears the inscription "In order to play the motif 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, and in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities" (Pour se jouer 840 fois de suite ce motif, il sera bon de se préparer au préalable, et dans le plus grand silence, par des immobilités sérieuses). From the 1960s onward, this text has mostly been interpreted as an instruction that the page of music should be played 840 times, although this may not have been Satie's intention. (en)
