- Wandelweiser és una xarxa internacional d'intèrprets i compositors experimentals que comparteixen un interès per la música lenta, tranquil·la i fràgil. La paraula 'Wandelweiser' podria ser traduïda com a 'senyal de canvi', 'el savi del canvi' o 'canvia sàviament' segons com s'interpreti la paraula 'weiser'. El col·lectiu va ser fundat a Haan (Dusseldorf) l'any 1992 (any de la mort de John Cage) pel flautista holandès Antoine Beuger i el violinista alemany Burkhard Schlothauer. El 1993 el clarinetista suís Jürg Frey va ser convidat a unir-se al grup, seguit pel guitarrista americà Michael Pisaro i el pianista suís Manfred Werder. L'any següent el trombonista austríac Radu Malfatti es va unir i ja posteriorment el grup va acollir el trombonista americà Craig Shepard i altres artistes i músics. El grup gestiona la seva editorial pròpia, Edició Wandelweiser, i el segell discogràfic propi Wandelweiser Rècords. Segons Radu Malfatti, la música Wandelweiser tracta "l'avaluació i la integració del silenci(s) més que una catifa continua de sons que no acaben mai." John Cage és una figura central per als compositors Wandelweiser; la seva música és sovint anomenada "música silenciosa," agafant com a punt de partida l'obra de Cage 4'33", una de les primeres composicions que consisteix en gran part de silenci, després de la "Marche Funebre" del francès Alphonse Allais. - The Wandelweiser Group is an international group of composers/performers. It was founded in 1992 by Dutch-born flautist Antoine Beuger and German violinist . In 1993 Swiss clarinetist Jürg Frey was invited to join, followed by American guitarist Michael Pisaro, Swiss pianist , then Austrian trombonist Radu Malfatti the following year, then American trombonist , and others. The group runs its own publishing operation, Edition Wandelweiser, and its own record label Wandelweiser Records. The music of the Wandelweiser collective is characterized by sparse, quiet, fragile soundscapes incorporating frequent silences. According to Radu Malfatti, Wandelweiser music is about "the evaluation and integration of silence(s) rather than an ongoing carpet of never-ending sounds." Michael Pisaro suggests that Wandelweiser works, which often involve extended durations of hours or longer, offer an alternative relationship to time; these pieces "become not a duration to mark, but a space to occupy". John Cage is a figure of central importance to the Wandelweiser composers; their music is often referred to as "silent music," taking as its starting point Cage's work 4'33", the first composition to consist largely of silence, after the "Marche Funebre" by the Frenchman Alphonse Allais. According to Pisaro, "Beginning with the music of John Cage, it has become possible to see time as having its own structure: not as something imposed on it from the outside by music, but something which is already present, which exists alongside the music."
