Effect | User endures recoil damage. |
The Double-edged sword is a recurring weapon in the series, and one of the most notable Cursed items.
Though the Sword is incredibly powerful it will always strike the wielder with recoil damage, with the exact amount varying between titles. Furthermore, the sword is cursed in it's first two games and can only be removed at a Church.
Design wise, the sword was originally an oddly shaped, almost Christmas tree-like spread of blades stemming from the hilt. With V the sword became much a more elegant scimitar, with the lower edge of the blade curving back to the wielder's wrist and matching a similar protrusion extending from the pommel. Due to all sword animations being based on the same swinging motion, the Double-edged sword was changed again for VIII into a bulky bastard sword style weapon that has two sections of razor blades before terminating in a spear tip.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
The Double-edged sword has an Attack bonus of +100 in the original and +115 in the remakes. It is found in a chest in the third floor of Zoma's Citadel, and may be equipped by the Hero and Warriors. Each strike deals 25% recoil damage.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
The Double-edged sword has an Attack bonus of +99 and deals 25% recoil damage. It may be equipped by Ragnar McRyan and the Hero. It is found in a chest in Endor's secret armour shop. Recoil damage remains at 25%.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The Double-edged sword has the same parameters as in IV, and may be swung by the likes of Parry, Tuppence Moosifers, Golems, Barbatoss, Beastmasters, Blizzybodies, Conkuistadors, Dwight, Killing machines, Mud mannequins, Mudrakers, Pip fighters, Restless armours, Slime knights, Starkers Warhogs, and Wax murderers.
It is found in Mt. Zugzwang on the mountain ridge, and is no longer a cursed weapon so it may be freely equipped and removed at will. This change will continue forward in every subsequent appearance. In the remake versions, Double-edged swords can be purchased from the Nadiria T'n'T board for 3,300 gold coins.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The Double-edged sword has an Attack bonus of +117, and it can be used by the Hero and Aishe. The recoil has been reduced to 1/6th (16.66%).
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]
An ill-fated sword surrounded by an air of danger. The Double-edged sword has an Attack bonus of +76 and a recoil of 1/6th. It can be upgraded into an Über double-edge with a two phials of Saint's ashes or be sold for 2,500 gold coins. The sword can be found in Princess Minnie's Castle.
The Über double-edge also has an Attack bonus of +76, but instead of hitting the swordsman with recoil damage it now deals 25% extra damage to the enemy.
