Hey again

Not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but...

If I don't manage to finish these GA reviews on time, could you help review Herobrine and Tears of the Kingdom for me? I'll be gone for a week, and I truly deserve this wikibreak. I figured you were the best person with your expertise on Wikipedia. TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 02:17, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

Yes, this is possible, check the GAN page instructions on how to seek a second opinion. I may not have the capacity to do TOTK straight away, that is a big undertaking, but can take a look at Herobrine, although that page looks like it may need some improvement. Happy to also provide some pointers on GAN reviews if that would help. VRXCES (talk) 02:21, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Vrxces/Archives/2024,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Faunasphere

Hi! Thanks for your comments on Draft:Faunasphere. I submitted it through AfC because I was unsure about the notability of the thing right now and it seems my fears were not unfounded. Would like your opinion on the following points and whether or not they establish notability:

  • Sources [1] and [6] are the most substantial "reviews" I could find that aren't on someone's self-published or user generated content website. I can add these to Reception, but they aren't exactly "critical".
  • I can make mention of the later works by Jason Begy (sources 2, 3, and 4) as academic work related to the game. They seem to be cited modestly enough - is that establishing notability for the game as the subject of studies after its decline or is this just a case of a fan with a background in game studies getting published? Also, it shows up in this, which I can't get full access to right now.
  • I did a further search and found at least one "review" on Adweek that seems more substantial but it was probably paid for as marketing. Anything else is as you say just a one-minute-read paragraph announcement for the various launches and later shutdown.

Thanks for your time. If it turns out to be insubstantial then I'll save a copy for my personal use and put it up as a CSD. Reconrabbit 14:01, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks - appreciate it. A quirk of how WP:GNG is applied for video games absent a medium-specific notability guide is that reviewers tend to look for WP:SIGCOV from WP:VG/S sources in the form of reviews as a sort of threshold and first port of call to assessing notability. This has its own benefits and flaws - not least of all that unorthodox release models such as web games never got reviewed formally in the same manner as traditional games. On the reviews, I would count the Endgadget article as a valid review; the Next Gen Player article is not really reliable and seems like a WP:USERG blog unless Paul Hunter has credentials. The AdWeek source is hard to say but could be at best evidence of WP:NEXIST. On the research, a quick snoop of Begy suggests that he was a Masters-level academic but not a professor or leading authority. As per WP:SCHOLARSHIP these papers are valid and significant coverage, but I would assume that a body of research by one author can't be taken as multiple reliable sources of coverage. The sources are currently also not used as secondary commentary or analysis but as evidence of how the game works and its context.
Long story short, this is obviously a borderline case; maybe resubmission and getting a second opinion from someone else helps. Also drafts can exist in the ether forever - you are welcome to keep it in play indefinitely just in case there is more out there. Hope that helps and isn't overkill on views/guidance! VRXCES (talk) 22:33, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your response. I will emphasize the scholarship aspect on this and resubmit it, but it's likely that as you said Faunasphere was just a prolific example chosen by some works due to its vocal userbase. There have been some recent efforts to re-engineer the game from the ground up a la City of Heroes but of course it has garnered zero external coverage, which is probably for the best for its continued existence. Reconrabbit 17:56, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks - appreciate it. Hopefully another editor can assess a second opinion - hope the drafting goes well! VRXCES (talk) 21:05, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of A Living Commodity

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on A Living Commodity requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a musical recording which does not indicate why its subject is important or significant, and where the artist's article does not exist or is eligible for deletion itself. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for music.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. JeffUK 06:22, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

A Living Commodity moved to draftspace - as requested on talk page of now draftified article. Notes about this soon at User talk:Vrxces#Speedy deletion nomination of A Living Commodity

An article you recently created, A Living Commodity, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Shirt58 (talk) 🦘 09:56, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for doing the draftify. I know this is largely automated text but there's an interesting gap between WP:GNG and WP:A9 which the above text doesn't really apply to. Anyway that's obviously best not agitated here but it's good to know for future. Thanks again! VRXCES (talk) 10:16, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
@JeffUK and Vrxces: So here are those Notes. And look at me, second guessing two editors who write brilliant content while all I write are micro-stubs. https://egyptianblueshop.co.uk/ isn't in any useful here, as it is just selling Egyptian Blue (band) "merch". The 19 October 2023 NME piece here would appear to me to WP:VERIFY that the band are from Brighton but only add the writer's opinion of the band. Possibly the same with this piece in Clash (magazine). The more I look at this, the more I see should look with to my editorial smarts - and most explicitly without without my WP:ADMIN hat on - to improve this.Shirt58 (talk) 🦘 11:37, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
It's all good! I think you've applied A9 correctly. VRXCES (talk) 11:51, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

DYK for Pokémon Crystal

On 11 April 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Pokémon Crystal, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal allowed players to trade and battle over mobile networks using an adapter (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Pokémon Crystal. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Pokémon Crystal), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

On the recent PB95 stuff

Hello!
Thanks for the suggestions.
Sadly, PB95 is a little niche, which is why there's not many reviews but the following:
- 3 reviews that were on the page in the draft.
- Metacritic user reviews (which are not allowed based on WP:VG/S)
- Portuguese review from a Wikipedia article of PB95 from the Portuguese Wikipedia
- Steam Curator Reviews (which I have no idea on the legality of).

If you could reply to me as soon as possible, that would be nice. Thanks! ThatPB95 Fan (talk) 03:18, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. Unfortunately, as you mention with it being a "little niche", this gets to the fact the game may not be notable as per WP:GNG. Metacritic citations in a review score template are welcomed but aggregator scores are not in themselves something that contribute to notability. Steam reviews are WP:USERG, and only worth adding when the score itself has been reported by several reliable sources as a noteworthy reaction of the game's user base. Not sure on the reliability of TechTudo; it doesn't appear on WP:VG/S and another one to possibly raise at the talk page there. Again, I understand this has a bit of tenor of shooting down the work you've done, but comfortably satisfying the conditions of the WP:GNG by WP:VG standards will help the article not be subject to a deletion discussion raised by someone else once published. VRXCES (talk) 04:56, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
Hello!
An update - I found two reliable sources, but they're in different languages. However, they are on the list. I'll list them both for you.
  1. 4Gamer.net (Japanese) [1]
  2. AwesomeGames.ru (Russian), however this is only a game feature [2]
And as you mentioned earlier, I might try to raise the reliability of Android Central and Zed Games. Thank you. ThatPB95 Fan (talk) 23:38, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Grimace's Birthday

Hello again! :)
I'm about to nominate Grimace's Birthday for GA status. TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 00:14, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks mate. Just a heads up that these are typically meant to be nominated by significant contributors, but given this is a really short article, you're more than welcome to nominate and I'm happy to chime into the GAN when it's accepted. Fortunately I think the article is mostly complete so there's probably not much to add in terms of sourcing or coverage. VRXCES (talk) 00:43, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

A Difficult Game About Climbing

Thanks for the review of Draft:A Difficult Game About Climbing. I am not the author of the original AfC draft, but when I saw its state, I felt like contributing as a fan of the game. On reading your suggestions, fair enough. It will probably take several months for coverage of the subject to proliferate across the usual channels, and many of the pieces I found stretch the boundary of being seriously journalistic in nature. I was surprised to see the limited scope of coverage one month out from release, especially given the game's popularity on the Steam charts and as a vehicle for generating content. Maybe in a few months there will be more press coverage to pull from on the tail end of the hype cycle. o7 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zetagaming (talkcontribs) 22:36, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

No worries! Yes, sorry if you're already across notability. Definitely in cases of WP:TOOSOON where the reviews just aren't there the ideal scenario is to keep the draft as-is and see if it can be furnished later. Great work though on contributing to it - that's always appreciated even if it isn't quite across the line yet in terms of sourcing! VRXCES (talk) 22:40, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Draft: Sonic the Hedgehog (film series)

Draft: Sonic the Hedgehog (film series) to be moved to Draft: Sonic the Hedgehog (media franchise) in preparation for Knuckles (TV series)'s release.

I noticed you declined the article on the legitimate basis that film series may be @ minimum 3 films. With the Knuckles TV series releasing, and considering that media franchises like DC Universe (franchise) are already well-published, I'd like to ask you to move it to that title so that it (as it definitely will under those rules) qualifies to be published.

Have a good one! ReddlSKye (talk) 23:56, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

It's ok. Welcome any edits but I'm not really sure there's much to add to this one. Long time no see!

Hey Vrxces! Long time no talk/see! Its been a while since I've seen you on Wikipedia. I'd recently taken a short break, but have gotten back on track. I've decided to take a step further into Wikipedia.

I am planning on submitting an application to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation. I had submitted an application a while ago, without any experience, which was obviously on me, but now, I think I'm ready, but, I still can't assure that. So I came to you. From the time I've known you, you've been helping me at stop signs, telling me what's wrong in my articles. Could you check my stats (xtools, pages made, logs, afd, contributions) and tell me if you think my work and experience could get my application accepted? I'd only be working in WP:VG, just like you :) Sincerely, MKsLifeInANutshell (talk) 14:41, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello! Creating an article through the AfC process is really on a case-by-case basis, regardless of the experience of the editor. For WP:VG articles, the rule of thumb that seems to be in vogue right now for an article about a video game to be notable enough to pass AfC is for it to have significant coverage from three reviews from sources that are generally considered reliable against the list on WP:VG/S. To find these sources, I tend to use Metacritic, Mobygames and the text search of the Internet Archive in that order. The three reviews must generally critically evaluate the game and not just describe them. If that sounds doable for your AfC candidate, I think you'll be fine! Happy to take a look too. VRXCES (talk) 23:17, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for replying, but I should've specified. I meant I was going to submit an application to become a reviewer. Could you reply again now that you know what my stupid English means? MKsLifeInANutshell (talk) 03:03, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Oh! Sorry, I'll get back to you. Your English is fine, I misread! VRXCES (talk) 03:43, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

You know the drill

Home Safety Hotline? TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 23:51, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for making some improvements to the article! The problem with HSH is that an entire section is largely sourced from a developer diary in the software that appears once you complete the game. So the software itself becomes a major source for a section in the article. I'm not quite sure how to address this speedbump other than providing a reviewer with the text from the completed game but there's no harm in us nominating and seeing what happens I guess! As a shorter article, again, fine for you to nominate. VRXCES (talk) 23:20, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
And just to clear the confusion with Grimace's Birthday, it doesn't really matter who nominates if they're a significant contributor, Wikipedia is collaborative after all, but generally the nominator is expected to be the one to action the comments (co-nominations are very rare) as they get the "credit" in the system for successfully bringing the article to GA. Not a big deal! VRXCES (talk) 23:23, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Copyright?

Hey Vrxces! I wrote the page on Marvel Rivals which you can check out by the way its really cool. I saw it had a new language, Spanish. I checked it out for some reason. I used the automatic google translate thing where it translates the whole page. I realized the whole page had been translated from mine. Is this normal or not? Thoughts? Sincerely, MKsLifeInANutshell (talk) 13:45, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

This is a common misconception: under WP:COPYRIGHT, the content of Wikipedia is freely licensed by the site and its users for others to use, reproduce and edit so long as it's attributed. Because the Spanish Wikipedia is the same entity granting the license, there's no issue. You may also like to check WP:OWN which is about the fact that no user really 'owns' the content of an article as a collaborative project. This may seem a bit strange, but this also means you can benefit from it the other way round: if an article in another language exists for one that doesn't for the English Wikipedia, or has more details, you can directly use or adapt them to use here! Let me know if that helps answer your question. VRXCES (talk) 23:11, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't think of it that way. Does that mean I can take Emmet Brickowski (the article I told you I wanted to make earlier that was about a character from The Lego Movie franchise) from the Simple English Wikipedia and copy it into the regular English Wikipedia with a bunch of changes and have nothing taken against me? MKsLifeInANutshell (talk) 03:08, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
