Mick, welcome to Wikinews! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

more interresting ???

[edit]

you have a strange sense of interest .... One change the title to remove the number of casualities changing all the time and you pull back a number , just because it's attractive !, not a very good idea, wikinews not tabloid .... Jacques Divol 21:58, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

tsunami story

[edit]

hi, thanks for ur work on the indonesia tsunami article. i do want to point out though, that updates to an ongoing event shld be done by creating new articles rather than updating old published articles.

Wikinews articles are not works in progress. Developing articles are marked with the {{develop}} template. Once written and published they are historical documents; they should not continue to be updated or changed. Especially, they should not be altered to an angle or POV not reflective of the article as it was published. Wikinews is not an encyclopedia.

Every little helps

[edit]

Just to let you know that people notice even minor edits, every contribution to the project is appreciated even if you end up with the odd discouraging remark due to inexperience. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:32, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to give you a bit of encouragement with the above comment. It may seem like a small change, but it is the sum of all the small changes which makes the wiki what it is. You've had a couple of slightly discouraging comments above and I thought it should be balanced a little with some encouragement for something trivial which you could easily have overlooked and assumed someone else would deal with. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

single source articles

[edit]

hi, appreciate ur contributions to wikinews. i notice that a couple of articles u wrote, eg Tube train evacuated after a landslide in west London, are based on only a single source. this is not a good idea, as multiple independent sources serve as one means of confirming details of the news event, and also reduced the possibility of a copyright violation (keep in mind, in many cases, a rewrite of a copyrighted article is also a copyright violation, collating the content from many different sources is not). the Wikinews:Content guide also says

To help guard against possible mistakes by news sources and to help establish a neutral point of view, editors are encouraged to find multiple sources on an issue, and fact-check those sources.

so, do please have atleast sources in an article before theyre published. cheers Doldrums 04:15, 28 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please stop

[edit]

Please stop editing the British police plot story, it should not be getting revised at all now unless there are errors. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:25, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mick. Thanks for the response and the edit. Just to let you know, its good etiquette to leave a reason for your edits in the summary. Cheers, --elliot_k 14:52, 20 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your question on main page talk

[edit]

You asked if you can re-order the stories on the main page. Well you sort of can depending what you mean by that. If you wanted to change what day its on, thats controlled by the {{date|month day, year}} on each article (However you should go about making sure that it would be the right course of action to change this date before actually doing it). If you wanted to change it so its going in an ascending order instead of decending order just for yourself, that can sorta be done. Can you be a bit more specific? Bawolff ☺☻ 21:14, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

In short, its possible, but very impractical. To do this, you'd proabbly have to go back to manual updating the main page, which is a hassal, and just makes everything more complicated (As well as being more fun for the vandals as less of the main page would be protected, and in theory they could vandalize it quite easily now, its less known now then it would be) (See WN:DPL for more information on how they're ordered currently). Also it would be hard to maintain neutrality when ordering by importance. Bawolff ☺☻ 23:33, 26 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
