Shortcuts

The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
  • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

I gave it an amateurish shot. I didn't want to attempt smoothing it out too much for fear of destroying detail. I did manage to clean it up a bit, got rid of a few imperfections, desaturated it a bit and recolored those blue socks! Still, I'm sure a better job could be done by someone with more expertise. Just out of curiosity, I looked around in the MOS for any guidelines on collages. Surprisingly, I found none. I suppose I'll offer an opinion then. I tend to think collages are unencyclopedic. I think grouping images in a gallery is good, peppering an article with relevant images is good, but simply pasting a bunch together for the sake of trying to make a stylish picture is not good and just adds unencyclopedic clutter. I would hate to see a trend in that direction. Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter? JBarta (talk) 20:48, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You say "far right". There appear to be 4 people specifically named in the photo, the last being Sir Wyndham Deedes. By the photo's description I take him to be the man in the black suit with the gold chain around his middle. But he is not on the "far right". The chap with the cap is on the far right. Wikipedia:Image use policy#Rules of thumb #7 discusses that. I guess I should have stayed with PNG, but the optimization wizard in photoshop was making the PNG twice as large as the "high quality" JPG, so that is what I based my choice on.   • I've smoothed the pixels throughout the cloth part so as to create a smoother feel, as well as sharpened the edges a bit and retouched some of the coloring to make it more realistic and less faded in appearance. -CamT|C 23:24, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
After some closer examination, it seemed that what this image needed (besides some retouching) was a lite shadow to help bring out the color, so I've gone ahead and added that in as well, and done a small amount of burning to bring out some of the shadows a bit more. -CamT|C 23:41, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's a lot of work that needs to be done if you're looking to remove all of the blemishes. I've done what I can, as well as retouched the image so as to provide some better color and detail and try to obscure the dust particles a bit more by blending them into the background (more or less). Also as a note, the man on the left (who was in the glare) was retouched by simply replicating the right side of his face and blending it in. I know that it isn't an exact copy on that part, and it's going to take more time for me to get that down better. -CamT|C 05:27, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request: I believe that I'm using this image properly under fair use; if so, is it permissible to join the two images and treat the combined image as nonfree? As you can see at the article, one is below the other; I'd prefer to have the two images converted into a single image that shows the two churches side-by-side. So it would be a bad idea to have a version of St. Michael's that is 135px high, the same height as the photo of St. Patrick's? Since the point of my proposed image is to compare the churches — can't imagine what else could legitimately be done with this nonfree image — I don't see why my proposal wouldn't be useful. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough: I'm not proposing that you upload a new version of the original of St. Michael's; all I'm suggesting is that you download both images, reduce the one of St. Michael's to the height of the one of St. Patrick's, create a horizontal montage of the two images, and upload. We're talking about image quality here. The problem with reducing the larger image is that it will loose it's quality by being reduced. My best suggestion is finding another image of the smaller one that is larger. -CamT|C 16:51, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Due to the ability to resize thumbnails, we generally discourage collage images (see the infobox collage at Armenians, where there are 6 individual images). Furthermore, this would be a bit confusing on the licensing front, because the old church image is non-free. I think a coding solution to your issue would be better than making a collage, and then having to delete the original (as we cannot have multiple copies of non-free content where one should suffice).-Andrew c [talk] 18:02, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
