Origins
[edit]How does 'Khandallah' translate to "resting place of god"; there is a 'Khandela' in India and Khan/Khand/Dallah/Allah all translate, but to my understanding the current spelling points to "King of the coffee pot" as a valid translation. Book_M (talk) August 2008
Being once a native of Bombay, I am more familiar with Khandala, a hill station that has an army cantonment nearby and was spelt 'Khandallah' in the British days. 'Khand' in Marathi and Sanskrit refers to a land division[1]. The large cantonment at Poona (as Pune was known then) was not far away, so soldiers would have stopped en route to Bombay. I am surprised to read that the Wellington suburb was named after an obscure town in Rajasthan that was named after an ancient king and does not particularly mean something.[2]. It was not noted as a British army cantonment.
