Nys/Nijs
[edit]Anyone know why his name is so often spelled "Nijs" on the internet and other places? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.102.88.58 (talk) 14:30, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- That's because the sound of "y" is in Dutch the same as "ij". In most Dutch words this sound is usually written as "ij" instead of "y", because "y" is more of an old spelling. I suppose that's the reason of the error. --Pelotastalk 22:21, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
What exactly is the "Grand Slam"?
[edit]Which titles constitute the "Grand Slam"? This page seems to suggest that attaining #1 at the UCI rankings is part of the 'Grand Slam'. This doesn't quite seem right. Articles like this one from cyclingnews suggest that it's not the position in the UCI rankings which is important; rather it's winning the World Cup. Are there any other sources which dispute that interpretation? --David Edgar (talk) 18:26, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- Probably it is winning the Superprestige, the World Cup and the Gva Trophy in the same year. They are the three season-long big competitions in the European Cyclo-cross season. 109.130.91.146 (talk) 15:13, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I'd have no disagreement with this as a definition (or various other definitions), but is this what the term normally means in common usage? Do we have any source? Would winning the world championships not also be part of it? --David Edgar (talk) 20:28, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- That article specifically mentions he already won Belgian and World championships that year as well as the Superprestige, World Cup was the final hurdle. This article (in Dutch) suggests "Belgian and World Champion, first in Superprestige and GvA as well as first in the world ranking". I think it would be reasonable to assume that the term isn't *properly* defined, but suggest it includes the following requirements:
- World Champion
- National Champion (to not restrict it to just Belgians)
- First in World Cup
- First in the UCI ranking
- First in Superprestige
- First in GvA
- Is this in compliance with the premise that Nys is the first, and only one, to have achieved it? WardMuylaert (talk) 17:17, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- This sounds all a bit WP:OR-ish to me. If we could get it properly sourced it would be better. In some years, the UCI did not create a World Cup ranking (anyone remember the blue jersey for UCI ranking leader?). SeveroTC 08:32, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- I agree about the WP:OR, the term Grand Slam seems to be pretty loosely used in the places I have been able to check. (eg pages referring to it without a clear indication of what it is) If we're just going by Wiktionary's "all major events", then it would depend on the season. However, then the question remains at what point is something considered a "major" race?. If someone is able of coming up with the article that first started using the term, that could be a start I guess. --WardMuylaert (talk) 17:04, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- It was probably in the Flemish press if anyone who watches/edits these pages and regularly read the Flemish sports pages could keep an eye out! SeveroTC 19:07, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- I've done some (read: too much) googling and put together some sources User:WardMuylaert/Nys, ideally I would copy the gathered info to the Talk page of a future "Grand Slam (Cyclo-cross)" page. Could people review/give more definite sources if possible? Also, tonight is "Flandriens van het Veld" on TV in Belgium, a show going through the Belgian World Champions. Tonight's episode happens to include the season where Nys made his Grand Slam so I've got fingers crossed they mention some sort of definition as well.
