Tang Da Wu's Untitled removed from article
[edit][Copied from "User talk:Jacklee"] Hi Jack, happy new year. I hadn't realise you're putting the article up for GA status, so I apologise for any disruptions caused to the article. Having said that, the contribution painting Untitled was removed, and you've stated in your comments insufficient fair-use justification for new image (not referred to in article at all). I thought of placing it in your article in the gallery column to display his repertoire of works created over the years, and now i don't understand how it doesn't help with the article. Perhaps you can advise me, before i take any other action to delete the painting altogether. Thanks -- Marcuslim (talk) 05:38, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying to improve the article by adding the image of the painting. However, I don't think use of the image, which is subject to copyright, amounts to fair use or complies with Wikipedia policy for the following reasons:
- A non-free image of a painting cannot simply be inserted into an article as an example of one of the artist's paintings. It can only be used if there is some critical commentary about the painting in the article: see "Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images". Currently, the article does not mention the painting Untitled at all, and you didn't add any information about Tang's painting technique that might have justified the use of the image.
- In any case, non-free images cannot ever be used in a gallery, because their "fair use" status depends on their proper use in the context of an article as part of criticism or analysis: see "Wikipedia:Image use policy#Photo galleries".
- Also, to ensure fair use of the image, you need to use a small, low-resolution (e.g., 72 dpi) version: see "Wikipedia:Non-free content#Policy". The resolution of your image is fine but its size is too large. Compare, for instance, the existing fair-use image in the article added by another editor, "Tiger's Whip.jpg". I'm not saying that your image has to be as small as that, but it shouldn't be as large as it currently is. I think you should scale it down so that its length is no more than 300px.
- I think you would be entitled to make fair-use of the image if (1) you upload a scaled-down size of the image to Wikipedia; and (2) you add some properly referenced critical commentary about Tang's painting style, and use the image in context with that information. Note that you also have to keep an eye on the total number of non-free images used in an article, even if the use of each of them is fair. This is because multiple non-free images must not be used if one image can convey equivalent significant information: see "Wikipedia:Non-free content#Policy". I hope this is helpful. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 06:02, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Jack, i have a better understanding now with your explanation. Thanks for sharing...you have a great reunion dinner tomorrow! Cheers -- Marcuslim (talk) 09:18, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
