Does anyone know what the song really meant ?

[edit]

Yes, an older version stated "Lionel Richie wrote the song after hearing his father give a speech at his thirty-seventh wedding anniversary especially for his wife, whom he loved dearly. " - but some idiot removed it to put the joke in. The person who put it in as an anecdote at the end, referring to Scott Mills by name was the best way to refer to the joke, in my opinion. What??? That is clear as mud!

Casey Kasem mentioned this particular version of the story in 1978 near the time the song topped the charts. Premiere Radio Networks has the tape, so they may be able to tell us which show of 'American Top 40' that Casey mentioned the story in. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.41.169.177 (talk) 07:44, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This one theory: Ritchie wrote this on the break up of his marriage.... She was a lady first, a wife second and a mother as well. Maybe?86.130.136.133 (talk) 14:51, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious / daughter

[edit]

I added the dubious tag as I don't see how he could have written it for his daughter given that Nicole was born in 1981 and adopted in 1983 and Sophia much later. From a quick search I found no evidence of another daughter Nil Einne (talk) 15:41, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
