Extinct Birds

[edit]

Should this not go into public domain as of tomorrow? Does anyone know of plans to make it digitally available? There are no library copies that are easily accessible to the public I think, and of course it needs to be done in color, like so: http://www.sil.si.edu/digitalcollections/nhrarebooks/rothschild/ Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 19:02, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hopefully things like the Smithsonian Biodiversity Heritage Library project will pick up these... Shyamal (talk) 00:03, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarised?

[edit]

Um, much of the text in this article is taken verbatim from the story at Haaretz linked to at the bottom of the page. Nice work. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.129.4.205 (talk) 20:29, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birds or butterflies?

[edit]

"In 1932 he was forced to sell the vast majority of his bird collection to the American Museum of Natural History after being blackmailed by a woman" — but the linked reference mentions only butterflies. 86.174.124.26 (talk) 10:56, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Barrow gives it as birds. http://books.google.com/books?id=BNs_e5N9fqwC&pg=PA192&lpg=PA192 and I think so does the biography of Mayr. Shyamal (talk) 11:05, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Political career

[edit]

Both the Dictionary of National Biography [1] and Britannica state that he was a Conservative MP. This article seems to be lacking in reliable sources and basic facts such as politics seems to have been incorrect from the first version of this article in 2003.--FDent (talk) 21:21, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Six zebras

[edit]

"drove a carriage harnessed to six zebras to Buckingham Palace".

Maybe. But photos on-line show a carriage with only four zebras.Jamesdowallen (talk) 07:00, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Correct name?

[edit]

When, as a zoologist, Rothschild was the authority on the naming of a species, should it say:

  • The species was described by Walter Rothschild in YEAR.
  • The species was described by Lord Rothschild in YEAR.

or should it be the former before 1915 and the later after 1915? And what about in 1915? (It appears that he described at least 65 species in that year.) Thanks,  SchreiberBike | ⌨  18:35, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case anybody notices this. I've standardized on "The species was described by Walter Rothschild in YEAR" at all times. If that's not correct, please let me know. SchreiberBike | ⌨  05:09, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we can quite happily go with Wikipedia's irreverence for wealth and power - Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Biography#Honorific_prefixes Shyamal (talk) 05:36, 9 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
