zone groups

[edit]
moved from my talk page.

Hello, I appreciate your initiative to bring a bit more definition to the template listing public universities in France. However, I'm not sure why the zones are a useful organizing principal. To the best of my knowledge, the zones' only role is to define which universities, schools, etc., go on holiday at which times. Holiday dates are not, it seems to me, a principal defining characteristic of a university. I cannot think of any other roles the zones might play. For example, I do not think there is any unified educational administrative authority by zone. Can you please clarify your choice of zones as the primary organizing device for the template? A further point, while on the subject. A primary or secondary school is constrained to follow the holiday dates indicated by its zone. A university isn't. While you'll find that they make efforts to have holidays at the same time as the other schools, you'll also find that a given university will stagger holidays. For instance, undergraduates taking holiday at the main time indicated by the zone, but graduate students a week later, in order to make maximal use of large amphitheaters for midterm exam scheduling. So, it appears to me that we now have a navigation box that uses as its main organizing principal the dates at which primary and secondary schools near a university take their holidays. Quite frankly, I just saw a comment on the {{navbox}} talk page about the template and I looked for suitable subgroups to separate the template into. By region seems to be the most logical, but since I'm not familiar with the naming for the different "super-regions" in France (if there are any...) and I saw the map image on this revision of the template, so I just decided to go with it. Feel free to revert back to this revision if you don't think the Zone grouping is beneficial. Also, I'm moving this discussion to the talk page for the template. ~ PaulC/T+ 17:54, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, have reverted to the point you suggest. MyPOV (talk) 14:49, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

public universities

[edit]

Hello, I do not agree on the action you did on French public universities today. Please refer to Établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel and revert to the full list as per previous days. Prof-en-g.... (talk) 15:01, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am simply undoing edits by someone (registered for perhaps a day), who classified non-universities as public universities. A public university is a well-defined entity in France. There are eighty-one of them, and I created and labeled many of the university articles myself, so I have no disagreement with labeling every bona fide public university as such. There are also several other categories of public institution of higher education and research in France. Each has its page. There's a page for grandes écoles, for instance. The institutes of technology have their page. By all means, please go ahead and create templates for these categories as well. -- MyPOV (talk) 15:33, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
