House naming is a method of identifying houses by giving a unique name to each building in a street or area. Postal addresses may sometimes include the name of a house, either with or without a number.
House naming has been describes as an English custom.[1]
The owner of a house can apply to a local authority for name to be assigned or changed. If a house is already identified by its number, the name cannot replace it; it can only be used as an additional identifier.[2][3][4] There are some restrictions on the names that can be used: according to Northumberland County Council, these include names of living people and names already used within the same area.[5]
According to research based on Land Registry data, The Cottage is the most popular name, followed by Rose Cottage,[6]
