Conflict of interest (COI) regarding Sitelen Emoji

[edit]

Devbali02 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)

Information icon Devbali02, in this edit[1]You wrote "Many attempts have been made to create an emoji script for Toki Pona. Most significantly, in mid 2019, Dev Bali compiled earlier attempts to create one Sitelen Emoji. This script is unique as it is 'democratically chosen,' with the community making and voting on changes to the emoji set regularly. Bali also made an android keyboard that makes using the script like pinyin for Toki Pona."

We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

The following was posted to my talk page at 10:07, 2 June 2020‎[2] then removed without explanation at 10:32, 2 June 2020 [3] I am re[postingt it here as evidence that the above message was read and understood.
I received a message from you about self promotion, in regards to sitelen emoji, and linked to an edit I made. But the edit you reversed had no mentions of my own name. Therefore, the edit you reversed had none of these: yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors
Sitelen Emoji is not "an organization." It is simply a writing system for toki pona. Yes, I am involved in it, and have made certain tools for it. But as was mentioned in the edit, sitelen emoji is simply a set of emojis chosen by the community. I do not own sitelen emoji
If you want, another person knowledgeable about sitelen emoji can make this edit. But since your allegations may have resulted from confusion as to what edit you are reversing and what sitelen emoji is. Bali (talk) 10:07, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So you claim to be the same same "Dev Bali" who (in your own words) "compiled earlier attempts to create one Sitelen Emoji" and "made an android keyboard that makes using the script like pinyin for Toki Pona". Please explain how this is not a conflict of interest. --Guy Macon (talk) 14:23, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:Guy Macon Read up on what wikipedia calls a conflict of interest Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest. It is to do with organizations and interests. I have nothing to gain by any of this information, neither am I a part of any organization that is mentioned here. This is not promotional or an advertisement. I don't know if you have read the entirety of the paragraph, but sitelen emoji is democratically chosen, meaning I have as much of a stake in it as any other person who wants to have a stake. I did make the android keyboard. And I did cite the Android Play Store page to show it's real. Somewhat related to this is the Wikipedia:Autobiography page. This clearly points out simply mentioning something about yourself is explicitly allowed, but subject to peer review. This applies even less so to me, since this is not a detail about my personal life, it is a creation. I state a simple, objective fact about an app I made. That it exists. This is really different from me narrating a life incident from my point of view. It is really a stretch to view this as a conflict of interest. But if it really bothers you so much, you can add a COI disclaimer on the page. I will not remove it. Even if this was COI information, if it is valid, it is allowed to stay. Bali (talk) 16:32, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You have been warned. Follow Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline or risk being blocked from editing Wikipedia. --Guy Macon (talk) 17:48, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:Guy Macon I said you can add a COI disclaimer if you see fit. I have no issues with that.Bali (talk) 17:57, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
First, you have to declare your COI. Second, declaring your COI does not exempt you from the rule that says you are not allowed to edit pages where you have a clear COI. --Guy Macon (talk) 20:54, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"Note that someone else may add this [COI Declaration] for you" - Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#General_COI Bali (talk) 06:01, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What part of...
"If you become involved in an article where you have any COI, you should always let other editors know about it, whenever and wherever you discuss the topic."
...and...
"You should disclose your COI when involved with affected articles"
...and...
"You are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly"
...are you having trouble understanding? --Guy Macon (talk) 08:26, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I will repeat "Note that someone else may add this [COI Declaration] for you" - Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#General_COI. If you think I violated the terms, that is good, you had me blocked and someone else removed Sitelen Emoji from the article. But it is clear that the COI is not the problem for you, as you mention on other forums, it is the self promotion that is bothering you. If this was a COI problem you would have made a declaration on my behalf. Kindly argue on the administrator's noticeboard now, not on my talk page. Thank you.
