Its versus It's

Hi Chaotic,

You've reverted the grammar change on It (novel) with the edit summary of "In this case, "It" is a being, not a pronoun. "It's" is the consensus, per talk pg". There is no consensus on the talk page, from what I can see: someone even pointed out that it's not spelled "It's" even in the novel itself! And of course "consensus" (which that conversation didn't have) doesn't trump proper spelling anyway. It's never means "belonging to it". When you change the word to "it's", you're changing the meaning to "it is". Please don't degrade the quality of articles by adding incorrect spelling. Firsfron of Ronchester 17:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Firsfron - regarding your comment on my talk page. You're right about lack of consensus. After I submitted that edit summary I realized I wasn't sure my memory of there being consensus was right and...yep, there wasn't one. Apologies on that. However, I continue to believe that "Its" is *not* the correct usage in this instance (the character is "It", which I see as being a proper noun which just happens to be a homonym/graph/phone to the pronoun). So, while I do apologize for the revert without consensus - I won't do that again - I'd like to see the issue resolved to an actual point of consensus. Soft redirects

I have created several soft redirects to Wiktionary today because (1) the articles were requested (see Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Applied_arts_and_sciences/Medicine) and (2) Wikipedia is WP:NOT a dictionary. If you will have a look at Category:Redirects to Wiktionary, you will find some five hundred very similar pages. This is a legitimate use of Wikipedia's resources. Sorry for offending you. I'm still learning my way around here, and I thought that a page with nothing but a redirect template was probably a good candidate for no-content SD. I've already read WP:NOT, but I'm not sure I understand how the fact that WP is not here to define things ties into creating redirect-to-Wiktionary pages, rather than just leaving the defining to Wiktionary and not redirecting at all. I'm sorry to have jumped on you.
Certain pages -- you'll note that the ones I've created are all sexuality-related pages -- have a tendency to attract, um, unenyclopedic content. The previous versions for these two had been deleted some time ago, due to inappropriate graphics, I believe. So the {{wi}} template is designed to balance several competing pressures:
  • Readers want the pages.
  • Vandals destroy them.
  • Wikipedia doesn't want articles that are just dictionary definitions.
The solution they came up with is to use this "soft redirect" system to send the reader to Wiktionary. We have a page (for the general reader); it's less enticing to the vandal because there's no real content; and we don't have "dicdef" articles.
It's not the right answer for all requested pages or for all possible words. (See the strongly worded "Do not place it on every possible word" instruction on the wi template.) But I think it's the right answer in these cases, and probably in more.

Ahhh, I see. That actually does make a lot of sense. Man, whenever I think I've got a good handle on things, reading WP:NOT and stuff, I always manage to run into something important that I missed.
I actually haven't made any major copyedits yet, despite my joining the LOC...I'm afraid I'll do it wrong! I'm good with grammar and clarity/flow, not so good with memorizing house styles, so I hesitate to do any article overhauls yet until I'm more familiar with all those little guidelines (like "punctuation goes outside the quotation marks unless pertinent to the quote" and such - my inner English teacher keeps screeching, "That's not what I taught you!"). keɪɑtɪk flʌfi (talk) 21:23, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, then, may I suggest a task for you? It appears from your sig that you've got a decent handle on IPA pronunciation. Would you be willing to clear out the eighty-odd aritlces in the Category:Wikipedia articles with nonstandard pronunciation? That would narrow down your "house style" issues to a single (and short) set of rules and templates (which you'll find at WP:MOS-P), and it would be a big help to those of us who don't have the necessary background. pronunciation corrections

I was in th process of changing the IPA, which was also totally messed up. I teach Chinese, so I am sure of how things are properly pronounced. My concern is that uneducated people continue to pronounce the breed name as "shit zoo," which is not very respectful to the breed. I hope that my changes will meet with your approval. The alternative is to represent in IPA the way people actually pronounce it in the USA, which is not uniform. People would probably prefer to have an accepted pronunciation that does not have unpleasant associations. P0M (talk) 17:11, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Michelle Stout

Hi there. I have removed the CSD tag that you placed on Michelle Stout. This article doesn't meet criteria A7 because it suggests that she is an All-American. An article does not have to prove notability to avoid speedy deletion, merely give a reasonable indication that its subject might be notable. I do not know enough about gymnastics or NCAA sports to make a reasoned judgement about her notability based on the criteria listed at WP:BIO and WP:ATHLETE, but I would suggest that you nominate the article at WP:AFD if you feel it should be deleted. Can you help?

I see you were listed as a participant in the League of Copy-Editors so it seems likely you can ... The thing is the Military history wikiproject urgently needs prose pros to help with our best articles. Milhist covers a broad range of interesting and varied subjects from film to biography, battles to weaponry, and Roman emperors to twentieth-century dictators. In Milhist, A-Class has become the last port of call before FAC and we are looking for people to help identify prose and MoS issues at A-Class A-Class Reviews and help fix them prior to featured article candidacy. We also have a copy-editing section in our Logistics Dept and that can always use experienced copy-editors. For most of our articles, you don't need to be a specialist in the subject matter, just good with words.

Request for help

Hi there! I have been referred to you by WhatAmIDoing? who edits most of WPMED, and who has a high opinion of your skills as a copy editor. I'm contacting you because I need a favour, and I KNOW that it isn't a small one! I am currently involved in a project to substantially improve the content of the Emergency Medicine and EMS Task Force, and have been busy taking a whole list of Emergency medical service by country articles from 'stubs' (where I found them) to 'B' class articles, and hopefully, even beyond! I have just finished a complete reworking of an article entitled Emergency medical services in the United States. I've gotten it up to a 'C' but it has been suggested that to get to a 'B' or beyond, it is going to need a good copy-edit. I normally try to do this myself, but right now, this article could use a fresh pair of eyes. I was wondering if you would be kind enough, and find the time, because you're obviously busy, to help me out with this project. Greetings Chaoticfluffy! I am working on an article about Swedish experimental band Meshuggah. I am one step before going to FAC. Hi Great11. That message was from almost a year ago (June 2008), and I really don't remember anything about your article in particular. Judging by the message I left and the fact that the page was deleted (again, almost a year ago), it was probably an empty or nonsensical entry and thus didn't meet wikipedia's standards of inclusion. Red Dawn Plausibility

I see you have removed my article on this topic due to lack of citation and original content. Would it be possible for you to restore the article and put up citation needed tags instead? Much of the content is not original (ie, runway requirements for IL-76 aircraft and the distance from Petroplavask to Anchorage), and all of it can be cited, as it based standard Soviet naval and ground force doctrine as it existed in the early 1980s, applied through standard operational planning procedures. While this may appear to be original work, it is as actually as un-original as military staff work can be. Citation needed tags would be very helpful in improving the article.

Hi :) I actually removed the section because it was both uncited and very peripheral to the article. Even if the section was completely cited, such a long section on plausibility gives undue weight to analysis of the movie rather than encyclopedic facts about it. The fact that it was also completely without citations didn't help, but it wasn't my only motivation (although looking at my edit summary now, I notice I didn't make that clear - sorry!). Citations for analytic sections like you wrote are necessary not just for individual facts, like runway lengths, but for the analysis itself, things like "an invasion over the southern border is not credible". We have a policy called "synthesis" which disallows sections like yours appeared to be, where the author takes facts and writes something that reads between the lines of the actual facts. If someone else in a reliable source had published a plausibility analysis of Red Dawn, then we could summarize that analysis for the article. But for an editor of the Wikipedia to create that section based on their own knowledge, is pretty much not allowed. We actually tend to be quite strict about this, so even for an analysis that seems obvious to the writer, we want to see reliable sources.
I would be very uncomfortable letting the section back in the article at its current length (a paragraph might be appropriate, a section the length of an essay is not) and without citations to a reliable source for the analysis itself, not just for individual facts. If you'd like to work on improving the section in the hopes of making it appropriate for the article, the text you added and I removed is still available in the article history (click on the "history" tab at the top of the article to get there), so you can access it there and copy it to your user page, where you can work on it at your leisure.
I'm going to ask that you please not re-add the section to the article without working on the things I've mentioned and then proposing the addition on the article talk page, so other editors can decide if any changes you make to the section render it appropriate for addition. keɪɑtɪk flʌfi (talk) 12:33, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

The article is pretty clearly not talking about jokes, but actual concerns. I very strongly doubt anyone's actual concern was that blondes might not understand that there is no '11' button on the phone, and if your proposal is that is was, I'd love to see a source.
It's also fairly inappropriate to add something that essentially says "hurf durf [insert mocked group here] joke" to an article unless the article is discussing such jokes in an encyclopedic context. I know from reading AN/I that you're prone to joking/sarcasm, which is cool, but it really doesn't belong inside the articles. keɪɑtɪk flʌfi (talk) 19:27, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

The fact that blonde jokes are benign isn't a reason to insert them into articles. Knock-knock jokes are also benign, but we don't have, say, "Knock knock! Who's there? The highest-grossing movie of all time!" in our lede for whatever movie that happens to be.

If you feel that a mention of blondes joke belongs in the article, perhaps you can create a section like "9-1-1 in popular culture" and put them, reliably sourced of course, there.keɪɑtɪk flʌfi (talk) 12:08, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Ramapough Lenape Nation

In reference to your comments. I have done everything for Wikipedia to keep the facts accurate. Every fact posted is supported by a reference. These references are from many bokks written from 1600- 1700's and are available to anyone who wants to read them. Undfortunately, when I first read the article about us on here, it had no references and was all POV baded on hearsay. I have spent many hours of my time to reference and post the truth. How can truth be NPOV? The Earth is the third planet from the Sun, now make that NPOV. NPOV means there are facts supporting both sides of a story. What if one side has no facts? Do you still post it even though it's wrong? The definition of an encyclopedia is "Reference work that contains information on all branches of knowledge or that treats a particular branch of knowledge comprehensively". This is what I have done. Any reference pertaining to us and is relavant, I have posted here. For this I get shut out for a week? Where is the justice in this?

Hi Ramapoughnative. I'm not sure what you mean by being shut out for a week. If you have been blocked or topic-banned, I don't know about it and certainly had no hand in it. The only part I played was adding a tag to the article that said that one of the main contributors had a potential conflict of interest, as you do.
That said, while I respect your desire to have the article reflect the truth, the way you are going about things at the article is quite misguided. Attacking other contributors, removing their changes, and insisting that the article stay at the version you prefer is not how we work things here at Wikipedia. Your actions show that you appear to think that by virtue of being a representative of the Ramapough Nation, you have special privileges in regard to the Ramapough Nation's Wikipedia article. This is not the case - all editors are permitted to contribute to Wikipedia. Any one contributor has no right to "police" the page and try to run other editors off, no matter how involved they are in the subject matter of the page. In addition, you tend to assume bad faith of anyone who contributes an edit to the article that you don't approve of. The fact that someone changed the article to say something that is not your wording does not mean that they hate Native Americans, or that they are prejudiced about the Ramapough, or anything else negative. It quite likely means they were passing by the article, saw something they thought they could make better, and changed it.
Your actions are disruptive to the encyclopedic, collegial methods we use here, and if you persist in them it's more likely that you will end up blocked from editing that page than anyone you perceive as injuring "your" article will. Please don't take that as a threat - I have no power to block you from anything. But edit warring and accusing other people of trying to hurt the Nation or its article will not help the article. This is interesting as I am the one who issued the dispute request. The person who was making changes, a. did not use a sign in and made no attempt to discuss changes. b. attacked the work stating it was "high schoolish" as a 1st message, c. added comments to the article without references. I hve no problem with anyone adding facts about us on here but it needs to be supported with references. To just add statements (and usually they're biased) should have a reference from an independent source (and i don't mean Cohen as his work is considered fringe per Wikipedia). The hatred for the Ramapoughs in North Jersey is deeply ingrained in the townfolks. Why? Because no one has ever bothered to challenge and correct them. I know you will not understand. My question is how can the truth be NPOV? A fact is a fact. What do you recommend to make it more in line with wiki rules and still keep the integrity?

Wikis Take Manhattan

WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

REGISTER The proper place to register your team is here. It's also perfectly possible to register on the day of when you get there, but it will be slightly easier for us if you register beforehand.

WHERE Participants can begin the hunt from either of two locations: one at Columbia University (at the sundial on college walk) and one at The Open Planning Project's fantastic new event space nestled between Chinatown and SoHo. Everyone will end at The Open Planning Project:

Orientate

Hi. "Orient" is also acceptable in British English, so I'll leave it be in Shetland Sheepdog. However, you're wrong! "Orientate" is the normal British word, and the other is often regarded as an Americanism – though it's true that both are seen and heard regularly. The (American English) link you left is I'm afraid simply wrong in respect of British English: the longer word is not less formal and it is not used humourously here – in fact if anything it's "orient" that's used informally. Both are given in the OED with no hint as to which is "better", though "orientate" is a younger word, and is probably a rather illogical back-formation from "orientation". But then Americans insist on using "transportation" when "transport" would do, and English of all kinds is hardly the most logical language – anyone trying to change that has a long task ahead... I like "orientate" because it is one of those little idiosyncracies of our (joint) language, and it would be a shame to lose it. Richard New Forest (talk) 13:48, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for not changing it, although if you do I promise not to edit war it back in. I did check with an English friend, who backed up my link's view that "orientate" is non-standard for something like encyclopedia writing, but I'm less than a neutral observer. "Orientate" happens to be, as I said in my first edit summary, one of my (American-speaking) pet peeves - which is odd, considering my training is in linguistics, where one of the first things they beat into you is that there should be no value judgments attached to word choice - so I kneejerk to remove it in a way that I wouldn't to almost anything else.
But then, I only learned this year (thank you, British editors on Wikipedia!) that "enrol" is a perfectly correct spelling of what I thought could only be "enroll", too. Learn something new every day! keɪɑtɪk flʌfi (talk) 14:01, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

I noticed that though englishplus.com does claim to acknowledge British variation, in fact it takes a solidly American line on everything where there's a difference...
