Reviewer permission
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:00, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I just wanted to say that you are right. I was thinking about the territory it covers, which includes Brussels, but indeed the majority is in the French Community. Stupid mistake. SPQRobin (talk) 12:43, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Edit of Gotye
[edit]From belgian citizenship laws: "A person at least 18 years old who voluntarily obtained another nationality before 9 June 2007 automatically lost their Belgian nationality." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.168.129 (talk) 07:19, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- That may be true, but as I understand from all sources I read, Wouter De Backer moved with his parents to Australia on a young age (as a child), and not as an adult of more than 18 years old.
- See: [1], [2] (you can translate the sites with Google Translate if necessary) and see the Wikipedia article itself (which may be a bad source in itself, but I display it here anyway):
Born in Belgium in 1980, De Backer moved to Australia with his family at a young age. His parents chose to use the English variation of his name, Walter, when enrolling him in school. From early on, De Backer displayed a passion for music, learning various instruments, piano and drums most notably. In his teens, De Backer formed the band Downstares with three of his high school friends, including Lucas Taranto who still plays in his Gotye live shows today. Downstares played shows mainly in the North-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and were noted for their song-writing maturity and assured live performances.
- And every source I read thus far says the same. They all don't portray the idea that Wouter has moved to Australia when he was 18 or older. GoldRenet 08:31, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
From the Belgium foreign affair website "2. You will automatically lose your Belgian nationality on your 28th birthday if: Between the ages of 18 and 28, your main place of residence was not in Belgium."
Regardless of my first finding, Gotye would have lost his citizenship for this reason as well. Gotye is 31, so past the age of 28...and his main place of residence during his years from age 18 to 28 were in Melbourne, Australia...not Belgium. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.168.129 (talk) 13:32, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
- Wouter De Backer does not fulfill the requirements of that section as the provisions there are cumulative:
2. You will automatically lose your Belgian nationality on your 28th birthday if:
You were born abroad after 1 January 1967.
AND
Between the ages of 18 and 28, your main place of residence was not in Belgium.
AND
You have not been working abroad for the Belgian Government or a company or association established under Belgian law.
AND
You have not made a "déclaration de conservation/behoudsverklaring" of Belgian nationality (declaration stating your intention to retain Belgian nationality) between the ages of 18 and 28. The declaration is made at the Belgian embassy or consular mission.
AND
You hold one or more other nationalities.
AND
You did not voluntarily acquire the Belgian nationality after your 18th birthday.
- For example, the single fact that he does not fulfill the first provision of the section, more specifically that he is born in Belgium and not abroad, makes that he does not fall under the section and doesn't lose his Belgian citizenship. GoldRenet 14:10, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Alright, going by Belgian nationality law#Loss of Belgian citizenship, I do believe it's very likely that this person no longer has the Belgian nationality. It says, "A person at least 18 years old who voluntarily obtained another nationality before 9 June 2007 automatically lost their Belgian nationality." and "A child under 18 will lose Belgian citizenship if a responsible parent loses Belgian citizenship." That means that if his parents acquired the Australian nationality after their move (which is more than likely since he himself has done so), then he automatically lost his Belgian nationality. So I really think his supposed Belgian nationality needs a source; the fact that he was born there is not sufficient proof. Prayer for the wild at heart (talk) 00:02, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for responding, I will look into it it one of these days. GoldRenet 06:52, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
- I found the time to look into it and I agree it needs a source. By looking at the rules at the Belgian foreign affairs website there is no certainty that Gotye would have retained his Belgian citizenship. Well, that is according to present Belgian nationality legislation. I know the law changed in 1985, but I don't know what the rules were before and whether Gotye moved to Australia before or after the law came into force. If lost, he may also have re-aquisited Belgian nationality.
- That aside, and by coincidence or not, Gotye came on the Belgian radio station "Studio Brussel" today on the occasion of the concert he will give in Brussels on October 30, and that same question our discussion is about, came up. The interviewer asked whether he was Belgian or Australian as (and I loosely cite) "both countries talk of Gotye as 'our' Gotye". Gotye then said that he was 'technically' both Belgian and Australian.
- Unfortunately, the radio interview is (and probably always will be) unsourcable, unless some news paper makes an article about it, which I doubt.
- This all taken together is why I agree it needs a source. GoldRenet 16:37, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Good find! The radio show can be used as a source like this: Presenter: Siska Schoeters (21 October 2011). "Goed nieuws van Gotye". Zet 'm op Siska. Studio Brussel.

- Ok, thanks! I didn't realise they put the interview online :p BTW, the interview was because of his concert in Club 69 on November 3 apparently, and not the one in the AB. GoldRenet 08:37, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
