Updating the Giving circle Wikipedia article

Hi, User:Ost316, I noticed you worked on the Giving circle Wikipedia article in the past and was curious if you'd be open to collaborating on improving the article further. I noticed the article has a flag, lacks secondary sources, and has too many external links and further reading entries. I drafted a new proposed sandbox to address those issues, but I won't edit the article myself due to my COI. @Chefmikesf: It looks like you did a good job incorporating the references into the text. I copyedited for various aspects, though many were more based on editorial discretion than on policy. In particular, I expanded the lead, reorganized some sections, added wikilinks, and changed the presentation of some text. In particular, I added a number of WP:REDLINKs, but I did not necessarily assess if they were notable. It can be worth checking if some have incoming links and if they are worth creating at least a {{R from related topic}}.

The main parts that I think could use work is the history, networks, and example section. Ideally, each would include a summary of the concept and its history, without the details about specific gifting circles which may not have notability. That would take more time looking over the sources, and I do not think that I will have much more time to look at this draft.

Because this already looks to be a rather extensive cleanup improvement to the current article, I would encourage you to move the article to Mainspace sooner rather than later, lest the mainspace article begin accumulating changes that you would them have to reflect in your draft. Since I have edited your sandbox version, you should use Request Moves to ensure that attribution is retained, even if you sandbox page is deleted. —Ost (talk) 19:52, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed about 10K bytes of extraneous content from the three sections while keeping your editorial suggestions in the sandbox. Do you think I could remove the banners at this point? @Timeshifter: While it's not, the editors don't format the text correctly if they don't have an ending slash. Well-formatted HTML helps prevent this, so I thought it was fine to make those edits as cleanup. This user supports global, cross-wiki, integrated watchlists.

<br /> violates the KISS principle. It is counter to the relative simplicity of wikitext. Especially clear here: Wiki#Basic syntax.

Mainly, it serves no purpose in wikitext. It is not treated differently from <br>

@Timeshifter: Thank you for the explanation. My changing of the tag essentially was because the gadget that highlights syntax requires valid XML. So, when it an open tag one without the closing one, it highlights the text in pink for the rest of the article. This seems to go against the link that you referenced, but it is a tool that is used frequently enough to be available as a Gadget in user preferences and I thought it made sense to make it work correctly. —Ost (talk) 18:29, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Help with redirects

Hi, Ost316, back in April you helped me understand redirects ( [1]), and now I've got another question. I would like to move this page: Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 to the title Chinese Immigration Act, 1885. The reason is that the official title of the Act is Chinese Immigration Act, 1885, so I'd like to change it from "of 1885" which is not the official title. The problem is that Chinese Immigration Act, 1885 already exists, as a redirect to Chinese Immigration Act of 1885. How do I go about changing it, so that Chinese Immigration Act, 1885 is the title of the article, and Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 is a redirection to that title? @Mr Serjeant Buzfuz: Generally, the best way to get a page moved to a title that is a redirect is to make a technical request at Request Moves. Explain the rationale for the move, as you did to me. Based on your explanation and not seeing any title discussion on Talk:Chinese Immigration Act of 1885 nor Talk:Chinese_Immigration_Act,_1885, this request can likely be made in the uncontroversial technical requests section. Someone will then review the request and probably perform a WP:PAGESWAP. —Ost (talk) 17:45, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi —Ost. This is a reply to a message from you that's visible on my user page, if you want to refresh your memory.

I removed the reference to the typeface Mercury for a few reasons. First, the typeface that the redirect links to is not the main typeface known by that name today. That honor goes to Hoefler & Frere-Jones' Mercury. Secondly, the newer typeface has the distinction of having been added to the collection of MoMA, a rare honor for a typeface, while the older one isn't very historically significant (afaik) or popular, and better known under another name. The redirected Wikipedia page does not appear in the first three pages of a google search (just checked), which should speak to the relevance of the typeface under that name. The typeface that wikipedia now references is best known as Forelle. It has not merited it's own wikipedia page. I have extremely high trust in the editors of Fonts in Use, they are all named and known in type design circles as historians, so you can trust what you read in that link. Furthermore, no digital versions of Forelle have been published as "Mercury". No major foundry has published a digital version, although two smaller players have done rough remakes. I'm not really interested in doing a Mercury page, making new pages is so hard, I save it up for subjects I love. But that redirect isn't very helpful, I think it should go elsewhere, for instance to the Hoefler page.

Oh and it's hard to parse "some of your recent contributions", so you know. But I haven't removed anything that I disagree with, except when the text has obviously not belonged. I try to write edit notes now, justifying the edits. I'm surprised I didn't do so in the Mercury edit. I was trying to add information about MoMA's historic type acquisition. Basil seed

Hello - on my talk page, you said: why did you remove the whole nutritional profile section and leave an unsourced section on fiber? That seems unnecessarily specific for a section, which is why I broadened the heading it to encourage expansion. After your revert, I saw that it was previously a broader heading with references that you removed. Where can one find that these sources or others are suspected of being predatory? Additionally, why would the claim about fiber or pectin need a medical reference, as opposed to a scientific one?

1. there are no reliable sources to affirm that basil seed nutritional properties have been well-studied. For articles where reliable nutrition information is available, we use the USDA FoodData Central database which I searched and found no results. 2. the references and content I removed were low-quality and misleading, based mainly on traditional medicine sources which are unreliable and do not meet MEDRS or SCIRS standards, so are avoided for nutrition or medical content on Wikipedia. 3. the MDPI article discusses the predatory nature of that unreliable publisher, which is listed on WP:CITEWATCH (see beginning disclaimer). @Zefr: Thank you for the explanation and link to Wikipedia guidelines; I did not realize that USDA was the only option for nutrition information and though the MDPI article expressed concerns, it did not mention Wikipedia's stance on the sources nor if all jounrals published by them were problematic.

My remaining question is about keeping the fiber part at all. I'm not opposed to it, but I don't understand why it should remain if its unsourced. My guess was that fiber/pectin are components of any seed, but that article doesn't mention it. Thanks, Ost (talk) 18:51, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

I agree so removed it. MDPI journals generally are unreliable, and should be avoided for the encyclopedia because editorial review may be absent and, even worse, the possibility exists that authors paid the publisher to have their article published. Usually, better sources are available.

I had left the fiber/pectin comment in place thinking you might know a WP:SCIRS source to support it. Despite its popularity in Asia and other countries, basil seed has not been well-studied, so we are left with limited or no information on its nutrients. Zefr (talk) 19:06, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Request for revisit and inputs

@Ost316 Thanks for your recent ce edits to the article Avret Esir Pazarları. Though the draft was mostly written by me and some work still remaining, some one else pushed it in mainspace. So the copy editors not having topic background seem to end up in inadvertent misunderstanding ending up in introducing unexpected edits.

As such I was looking for title change of the article (then draft) on lines of it's short description "Non-elite-commoner-women slavery in Ottoman times" (- that is how my later focus became while writing the draft as I came across reliable sources). I would request your suggestions for alternate article title suitable to short description.

Problem with shortened title 'Avret Pazarları' is there is one more women's market in Istanbul without slaves resembling this shorter 'Avret Pazarları'. Until we come up with other alternate title I would prefer to continue with 'Avret Esir Pazarları' rather than 'Avret Pazarları', if you do not mind.

Since you have already read the article at least partially, I would prefer to have one more ce suggestion from you, which I will write in separate section.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
