Hi P199. Thanks for kindly ticking my Ulnaby DYK nom. Please could I ask whether you could kindly have a look at John Evan Thomas (1810 - 1873), nominated on 10 March? No-one has got around to giving it a tick or cross, and it's about to fall through the net. Before I got the DYK-length gadget, I mistakenly thought I had expanded it 5x, but I had not. However the article was created by User:Victorianaesthete on 9 March, so it's still valid as a nom. Victorianaesthete put a lot of research work into starting the article and supporting my expansion so deserves recognition for that. Sorry to be asking a favour.--Storye book (talk) 20:00, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 00:01, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Local services boards

[edit]

It might be appropriate to consider an alternative method of reorganizing the categories, but in the meantime Loring, Port Loring and District, Ontario does still has to be in some category, whether as "communities", "municipalities" or something else entirely, that has the words "Parry Sound District" in it. I realize that "communities" isn't ideal, but it's less problematic than "municipalities" — and the article does have to be filed somewhere in the Parry Sound District's category tree. If you think there's enough of a case to support creating Category:Local services boards in Parry Sound District, though, that might be an alternative. Crossing Intl Date Line.JPG

[edit]

Hi P199. Thank you very much for all the images you've contributed to Commons. Just a heads up: I noticed that there might be a copyright problem with your Commons upload commons:File:Crossing Intl Date Line.JPG because it's a photo of an in-flight monitor screen, so I added a commons:Template:Disputed template explaining my reasoning. If you have any more information to add, please move my explanation to the image's talk page and respond on that talk page.

P.S. What kind of camera do you use to take your photos?

Cheers, Unforgettableid (talk) 01:16, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you appreciate all my images. Maybe you could consider awarding a {{The Photographer's Barnstar}}? I use a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1, it won't make Featured Pictures but more than adequate for my use.
As for the Crossing Intl Date Line.JPG image, I think applying copyright to a fraction of a fuzzy screen-shot of a generic map is far beyond the intent or scope of any copyright law. I'll add these comments to the image talk page. -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 13:55, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem; I've added a photographer's barnstar at User:P199/Awards. Your camera is a five-megapixel camera; I've looked at a few of your recently uploaded pictures, and they're much less than five megapixels. Why not upload higher-resolution photos? :) As for the date line image, you might be right. I moved my reason-for-dispute from the image page to the image talk page, right above your reply to the dispute. We'll see what the Commons admins decide. Cheers, Unforgettableid (talk) 17:57, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks a lot! Why not 5M pixel pictures? Well, most of my pictures are of mundane places and objects, and a screen-sized pic is more than adequate. They just don't need such high resolution. Smaller sizes take less space and upload quicker. I appreciate though that you like higher quality pics. I'll keep this in mind for future uploads of more scenic pictures. -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 19:07, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
came across your photos while browsing around muskoka related stuff. i agree with unforgettableid, higher quality is always preferable. storage is cheap and constantly getting cheaper, wouldn't worry about space issues. consider wikipedia a repository, when future generations look back upon these images with their holographic 3D monitors, they will appreciate the extra bit of data. cheers from a fellow muskokan WookieInHeat (talk) 21:42, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Shark attack articles

[edit]

Hi P199, I'd like to ask you for a favor please. The article is nominated for DYK. Your merge request will prevent it from being promoted. May I please ask you to take it off for now, and resume it a few days later after DYK is done? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:41, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am opposed of merging at all as I specified in the discussion. IMO, if they are to merge the other article should be merged into conspiracy theory one because conspiracy theory is very unique and notable on its own, while sharks attack not so much. On the other hand there's nothing really to merge there because conspiracy theory one does describe the attacks too. Maybe the attack article should be deleted? But I believe they both should stay and stay on their own. In any case nothing bad will happen, if it is postponed until after DYK. --Mbz1 (talk) 15:05, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi P199

I noticed your remark, because I wrote the wikivoice - one of my first ones in Wikipedia - and I want to be very accurate and sharp in respecting the five pillars.
All the voice is intended to be fully respectful of the five Wikipedia pillars and especially the core contents, i.e. neutral point of view, verifiability, no original research.

I tried my best to respect and apply all the points listed in Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view#Explanation of the neutral point of view.
All the information is purely based on facts (No original research). All the facts are token by different sources: on 16 references just 3 are from the company website (objectivity).
All the data are on the web (Verifiability), internal wikilinks are present, wikivoice is not orphan. The wikivoice is based on facts, not simple opinions (Neutral point of view).
I don’t think it is written as an advertisement: a company's voice has to be detailed - company's history, organization, activities, projects - even risking to be also quite boring per itself.
I wrote it in non-judgmental language and it is quite detailed as it was my first full wikivoice and I wanted to make it complete. I still think I made a good job.
As I am a new wikipedian, please let me know exactly whether and where I was wrong, so that I can improve myself for my next wikivoices. Thanks --Gabriele1972 (talk) 14:36, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you are a participant of the WikiProject Quebec.

The Outline of Quebec was created a few days ago and is under vigorous development. It fills a gap in Wikipedia's set of outlines. It is the 3rd outline to date about a Canadian province/territory.

Outlines form one of the subsystems of Wikipedia's contents navigation system. For more information on outlines, see Wikipedia:Outlines and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines.

The goals for the Outline of Quebec is to complete it to as high a standard of quality as possible, and to make it even better than the Outline of Saskatchewan and the Outline of British Columbia.

Once the Outline of Quebec is completed, it will provide an important example to others creating outlines for the remaining provinces and territories of Canada.

Please take a look at the outline to see if you can notice (and fill in) any missing topics. Pictures would also be nice (the rarer and the more interesting, the better).

Thank you.

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 10:50, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A photo request for while you are out and about your travels

Hello. I'm guessing you call the Ottawa area home, or are within close access of it (although I may be completely wrong, in which case ignore me)? I was wondering if you'd be able to take a photo or two of Highway 416 for me while you're out and about taking photos, if it's not out of your way (unfortunately Ottawa is many hours of driving for me)? One would be of the 416/417 interchange from Richmond Road.[1] The other would be of that lovely bridge as you come into Ottawa.[2]

Cheers, ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:17, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed I did, though I was never sure where you centred around until you uploaded a picture today and I made the connection. That pic is the one the article uses now, but I find the drivers perspective too noisy an angle for urban freeways (tall walls, overpass and signs obscuring the view) and that from atop overpasses or from the shoulders produce much cleaner shots. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 21:19, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When I created the article, it was rather whimsical; it was just one of those places to me was a mystery for a long time until I started to find out about its history. After time I began to feel that maybe it wasn't notable enough, and it wasn't hugely popular, and Chaudiere Falls had much more hits. By today I realized that nobody else contributed to it, so I merged it. I don't really feel strongly one way or the other. Hey P199/Archive 2! I'm just dropping you a message because you've commented on (or expressed an interest in) the Article Feedback Tool in the past. If you don't have any interest in it any more, ignore the rest of this message :).

If you do still have an interest or an opinion, good or bad, we're holding an office hours session tomorrow at 19:00 GMT/UTC in #wikimedia-office to discuss completely changing the system. In attendance will be myself, Howie Fung and Fabrice Florin. All perspectives, opinions and comments are welcome :).

I appreciate that not everyone can make it to that session - it's in work hours for most of North and South America, for example - so if you're interested in having another session at a more America-friendly time of day, leave me a message on my talkpage. Replaceable fair use File:Crossing_Intl_Date_Line.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Crossing_Intl_Date_Line.JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Dream out loud (talk) 07:43, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
