re: my calendar

Hello - thanks for the message, and you're completely welcome to use my calendar! I started using it when I adapted Gurch's user page and I expanded it to change each month. You can copy it entirely and use it in your user space if you want, but it's okay to just use mine. Believe me when I say that I have zero knowledge of how to write code on the MediaWiki software, so if I can figure out how to work with this, copy it into my space, and change stuff, you can too. :-)

Here's how it works: The code you now have on your page uses User:KrakatoaKatie/Templates/Calendarbox, which is the template for the blue-bordered box with the date above it and the color of the userbox part itself. The template, in turn, uses the current month's name to get the different monthly pages - User:KrakatoaKatie/CalendarDecember this month, User:KrakatoaKatie/CalendarJanuary next month, and so on. Those master lists use 'current day' to change the content of the box every day. Look at it and study the actual content of the pages for a few minutes and I think you'll have an 'aha!' about how it works - it's really very simple.

If I don't have an event or anniversary for a particular day, it defaults to either a 'nothing's happening today' or (depending on the month) a 'this month is National Whatever-Ridiculous-National-Month-It-Is Month' thing. I haven't gone through it for 2011 to change the holiday dates yet, so no guarantees about accuracy.

If you copy it into your user space and change the code to use your pages instead of mine, you can customize your calendar to your personal tastes and colors instead of mine. Nationhood vs. Statehood on National Animals

I wanted to talk to you about this (we already talked somewhat on the talk page, but ah well).

I would still think that not only Ichkeria would still belong on the National Animals page for a couple of reasons:

1. Specifically to Ichkeria, the Chechens' reverence for the wolf as the symbol of the nation, even more important than the flag, is a good case of clearly having a national animal.

2. Your argument confuses "nation" with "state" (that you are American probably doesn't help here, since Americans refer to their provinces as "states"). The latter includes Monaco and Andorra, but not Catalonia, Scotland, Ichkeria, Tibet, etc. The former includes Catalonia, Scotland, Ichkeria, Tibet, South Sudan and so on, but not Andorra and Monaco.

3. To add to the second, in many cases the main group within the state which these stateless nations reside often actually refers to them as nations. In the case of Scotland and Wales, they are referred to as being different "home nations" from England, and the United Kingdom is seen as a union between different nations. In the Russian Federation, certain ethnic minorities are referred to as being separate nations (or "nationalities", if you prefer that translation), and have territorial units referred to as "Republics". In addition, Russian academics (including the overwhelming majority- Russians who oppose secession of minorities) even refer to Chechens as being a separate nation (Arutionov being a good example, among others) frequently, and some Russians will even get angry (at least, some have in my experience) if you call certain parts of the Russian Federation- which, like the UK or Spain, is seen as a Federation of different nations. Hence, even the concept of Scotland and Ichkeria/Chechnya as lacking recognition as nations is questionable.

4. At its current state, the page has some double standards. The Isle of Man is included, but Catalonia, Scotland and Ichkeria or not.

5. The current state of the page (and its counterpart, sub-national animals) confuses "national minority" with "subnation". A subnation is (or at least should be considered) a subdivision of the nation rather than a nation that shares its state (Texas is a subnation, Scotland and England are nations).

To be honest, my reason for posting here is mainly because the Chechen wolf phenomenon is such a classic case of national animal reverence (perhaps one of the best cases), but I also feel, especially after posting this (sorry its so long) that we should develop a policy with regard to this sort of thing (i.e. one that makes a distinction between national subgroups and stateless nations).--Yalens (talk) 01:20, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Smarkflea

Pls do not undo my edits for Singapore's national animals. I am a Singaporean living in Singapore, and I know. Your previous list is incorrect.

The merlion is just a mythical creature from folklore. It does not exist. Its like saying the dragon is the national animal of China!

The peacock bass is not indigenous to Singapore. Its a cichlid native to South America. It was introduced by sports fishermen a few years ago. I compare this to the snakehead fish introduced illegally into lakes in the US a few years back. The snakehead fish is certainly not a national animal of the US.

As for that crimson bird. No one here has any idea of it!

I have changed the animals to Crow, Mynah, and the Singapore Cat. These are more representative of our national animals. Crows and Mynahs are found almost everywhere in Singapore. In fact, their population is growing. Most people here would agree that they are our national animals. As for the cat, have you hear of the Singapura Cat (kuchinta) which is famous all over the world?

Dear Smarkflea, I heavily edited the flooding of the Nile page yesterday for a few reasons and would appreciate it if my edits were not removed. The final sentence: "In the meantime..." I think this is too informal and irrelevant. The fact is that Egypt's population rose. That's it. I also removed the word inhabitants because it was unnecessary because the word population appeared beforehand. I also edited the wording of the final sentence of Perennial irrigation section. Isma'il Pasha did not build the Ibrahimiya Canal, he commissioned its construction. The wording implied that Pasha built the Canal, which he did not. The Importance For Egypt section was removed because "If it were not for the Nile River, Egyptian civilization could not have developed" is totally conjecture and unprovable and is not the type of information that belongs on a Wikipedia page. The rest of the section, from the Nile as a gateway to the unknown world and inundation as the annual coming of the god, are nonsensical. I ask which God? Finally "Possibly Egyptian mythology was based on this understanding..." There is no source, nor evidence to this theory and so does not belong on Wikipedia.
