Philip Johnson & the Rockefeller family

[edit]

I am not reverting your edit; this is a discussion only at this stage. You state that "his direct work for the family was a townhouse... for Abby" (actually the "Rockefeller Guest House'), which implies this was all he did.

According to the definitive biography, Philip Johnson: Life and Work, by Franz Schulze, University Of Chicago Press, 1996 (479p), this is not so (I have added this study to Further reading). His other direct work outlined in the book includes:

  • The MoMA Annex ("21 Building");
  • The MoMA East Wing;
  • The Rockefeller Sculpture Garden at MoMA.

(It also discusses at length his relationship with MoMa and with the family, including Nelson, David, Abby and Blanchette. I do not own the book; this is from Amazon: [1] - with a search of the index and the text.) In addition, the info on Johnson's position on the Junior Advisory Committee of MoMa is from the definitive biography of NR by Cary Reich (1996) (p.102), backed up by Schulze in his innumerable references to MoMA in his study.

On Kykuit, the citation used was from the "official" history of the family mansion written and researched by Ann Rockefeller Roberts (which I do own), in collaboration with the Kykuit curator; she is the daughter of Nelson Rockefeller. It includes "never before reminiscences" of family members. The actual quote for Johnson on page 30 states:

"{Nelson} came up with the idea of transforming the empty basement passages {under Kykuit} that lead to the grotto into an art gallery. Renowned architect Philip Johnson worked with Peter Ogden to redesign the space."

It's entirely possible that Schulze did not have access to the information that Rockefeller's daughter had. It would be strange indeed for a family member to get the authoritative history of the mansion she was brought up in wrong.

In light of all this I will consider an edit to this article, detailing Johnson's work for the family. QuantumOne 02:54, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

David Shankbone

[edit]

Hey - I appreciate your taking time to pass along a compliment re: Philip Johnson; the photo of the AT&T Building and the atrium of the New York State Theater are mine on that page. I plan to photograph the Bobst library at NYU and Worldwide Plaza soon. I've tried to get a good one of the Seagram Building but it's surrounded by so many other skyskrapers that it's difficult to get a good shot; although on that page is my photo of the Calder sculpture in the plaza. I use galleries sparingly, although I have started to use them more and may put one on the Johnson page. On pages like Lever House I think a gallery adds alot, although too often they are used as graveyards for sub-par images. Keep contributing, and I encourage you to start photographing your own corner of the world; you can help others see what you see. It's also good fun.
