Janis E. Lyons is a senior vice president of National City Corporation and the chief risk officer for Enterprise Risk Reporting and Analysis. In this role she is responsible for the development and ongoing management of a framework and process for measuring and reporting enterprise risk across all lines of business.

Prior to her current appointment, Ms. Lyons was director of the Best In Class program office from 2005-2006, during which time she shepherded Best In Class projects from planning to implementation. She was president of National City Card Services from 2004-2005 and corporate comptroller from 2000-2004. She was appointed a senior vice president of the corporation in 1997, and for the next three years oversaw Corporate Accounting. She managed Financial Communications from 1995-97, assuming responsibility for external financial reporting and communication with investors and analysts. She previously served as vice president and director of Investor Relations for six years, following a five-year stint as an assistant vice president with the Corporate Treasury Group, where she served as budget director and managed the Internal Funds Transfer Pricing System. She was promoted to bank investment officer in 1983 with responsibility for managing the bank’s reserve position. She started her National City career in 1978 as an administrative assistant in the Bank Investment Division.

Ms. Lyons has a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in finance and a master’s degree in business administration from Cleveland State University Personal and professional activities

Luigi De Crecchio Italian anatomist, born September 11, 1832, Lanciano (Abruzzen), died December 1894.

Associated eponyms: Fibiger-Debré von Gierke syndrome Adrenogenital syndrome of salt loss. An inborn error of metabolism characterized by a deficiency of enzymes involved in the production of adrenocorticosteroid hormones.

Biography: Luigi de Crecchio obtained his doctorate in Napoli in 1855. He became Supplementary professor in 1861, and in 1862 extraordinary professor. In 1868 he was appointed full professor of forensic medicine at the University of Napoli, remaining in this position until his death in 1894.

He was twice elected to the Italian parliament, Camera dei Deputati (Chamber of Deputies), where he was a strong advocate of the interests of medical teaching, and in particular the clinical education in Napoli.

De Crecchio supported the transfer of the clinics near the large Ospedale degli Incurabili. His main contribution, however, is probably that he established an experimental basis for the study of forensic medicine and, despite major difficulties, established an institute of forensic medicine in Napoli. The morgue of Napoli became attached to this institute.

Camp Matttatuck

Camp Mattatuck is a Boy Scout Camp in Connecticut owned by the Connecticut Rivers Council. It first opened in 1939, and today has florished to become one of the highest regarded scout camps in the area. It is run for six weeks each summer by a staff of roughly 60+ adult and youth members. It has a group of dedicated volunteers who contribute to the camp year-round, the Mattatuck Volunteers. The camp is also a popular location for Winter camping, with 6 cabins available to any registered scout troop.

Victoria A. Graffeo, Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals, was born in Rockville Centre, New York in 1952.

Educated in the Schenectady and Guilderland public school systems, she graduated from the State University College at Oneonta in 1974 and received her J.D. from Albany Law School of Union University in 1977. She engaged in private practice from 1978 to 1982, and entered government service in 1982 as assistant counsel to the New York State Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse. She began employment in the State Legislature as counsel to Assembly Minority Leader Pro Tempore Kemp Hannon in 1984 and served as chief counsel to Assembly Minority Leader Clarence D. Rappleyea, Jr. from 1989 through 1994.

On January 1, 1995, she was appointed Solicitor General for the State of New York by Attorney General Dennis C. Vacco and served in that capacity until appointed, in September 1996, by Governor George E. Pataki to fill a vacancy in the State Supreme Court, Third Judicial District. She was elected that November to a full term as Justice of the State Supreme Court and, in March 1998, became an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Third Department. Her appointment to the Court of Appeals by Governor George E. Pataki was confirmed by the State Senate on November 29, 2000. She currently resides in Guilderland, New York.

Shotgun Surgery

Shotgun surgery is an antipattern in software development and occurs where a developer adds features to an application codebase which span a multiplicity of implementors or implementations in a single change. This is common practice in many programming scenarios as a great amount of programming effort is usually expended on adding new features to increase the value of programming assets. As a consequence these new features may require adding code in several places simultaneously where the code itself looks very similar, and may only have slight variations. Owing to the fast paced nature of commercial software development there may not be sufficient time to remodel (or refactor) a system to support the new features trivially. As a consequence the practice of cut and paste coding is prevalent; the code is written in a single place then simply copied to all other places where that implementation is required (with any required changes applied in-place). This practice is generally frowned on by the refactoring community as a direct violation of the Once and Only Once principal - ultimately any change to the new functionality may require widespread changes. Further to this any potential software bug in this new feature will be replicated manifold and can make bugfixing particularly difficult and tedious. Even in the absence of copied code the implementations are guaranteed to be very similar and just as prone to requirements change or bugfixing. This form of software development tends to favour short-term improvement (in the form of additional features) at the cost of long-term maintainability and stability.

The canonical example of this practice is logging which generally adds prologue code to many functions simultaneously, per example:

Here a single requirement has added similar code to several functions simultaneously. As such any change in requirements here (viz. adding line numbers to the log) would now require a considerable effort. It is important to note that shotgun surgery is not synonymous with cut and paste coding, as highlighted by this trivial example. The practice of copying code can be viewed as a "means to an end", where shotgun surgery is merely an "end" (i.e. there are many ways to reach the same conclusion).

Consequences of Shotgun Surgery

The concerns with this style are by-and-large the same as those for any duplication in a software system; that is, duplicating the same logic in many places can vastly increase the costs of making changes to the same logic later. Some of the aforementioned costs are measurable, others are not (at least not trivially).

Typically some combination of the following is to be expected:

Increased developer effort and reduced throughput

Associated monetary cost of the above (as in commercial development)

Psychological effects and potential neglect of code

Of these the most insidious is the psychological effect which can exponentially lead to software rot. When uncontrolled this can cause entire codebases to become unmaintainable. Generally the only solution to this problem is to completely rewrite the code (at substantial cost).

Mitigation

The most promising approach to solving this problem lies with Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP). This aims to reduce these forms of invasive modifications in favour of adopting an "aspect" or "concern". The solutions take the form of boilerplate code which can be applied over a domain of functions simultaneously (through the process of weaving) which vastly reduces the amount of duplicated code. The use of Domain Specific Languages is also becoming more widespread where light-weight compilers are written to generate most of the duplicated code on the behalf of the programmer. Both methods fall into the broader categories of code generation and automation.

Hi,

Knanaya Community is a very distinct ethnic and religious group whose ancestry traces back to Abraham. Knanaya Christians, a hybrid people of Indian and Jewish descent, carved a unique niche for themselves in India. They developed a style of life that was borrowed from both their Jewish and Indian progenitors but jelled into something that was essentially their own. Knananites continue to be an endogamous community.

In Jewish culture of a century ago, we are told, there was a community figure called the Yenta who made sure that a nice Jewish boy married a nice Jewish girl. The desire for endogamy (mating within the group) can be symbolized by this semi-mythical woman the Yenta.

In one troubling study that covered six generations of a small endogamous group, researchers documented dramatic evolutionary changes. They say that the later generation's small gene pool and the inbreeding has increased the frequency of detrimental rare variant in human meta populations, leading to overall worsening of population health. The low genetic diversity (inbreeding and population bottlenecks) has caused reduced fitness and an increased chance of extinction.

There is a genetic jackpot in the community's endogamous gene pool. Many individuals are affected with genetic diseases in our community.

The load due to genetic diseases is so high that it might lead to our extinction. Of course, you don't see that kind of impact on a population's health when the endogamous population in question is a nation of 120 million like Japan or Israel. We seem to have far too many traits that serve our genes and not the greater interest of our community. But I think it will be the end of us unless we are able to change. Not marrying first cousins etc is a way to minimize damage. Also I am hopeful (again as a very inexpert lay person) that genetic science may in time alleviate whatever ills these small gene pool people may be suffering.

It seems therefore that the next cycle of evolution for humans will throw us back to lower but more rational animals (the primitive brain) or we will evolve to be able to question the false beliefs that we hold.

Solution - A Marriage Code The notion "why marry a stranger" should not prevail in the community. The church should place restrictions on marriage to relatives. Knanaya Samudayam should come out with a compherensive marriage code which defines the restrictions and required distance for marriages within the community. The code should ensure that the couple maintain a standard of required distance ( in both consanguinity and affinity)for marriage.

Note: I cannot find this article anywhere in Wikipedia-The main page John Hunt appears, but I've put in this mans's name. The article was declined yesterday because it was thought to already exist.

John Hunt was a historian, antiquarian, and collector. Together with his wife Geraldine,he amassed the collection that today forms the basis of the Hunt Museum, Limerick, Ireland. He encouraged Lord Gort to restore Bunratty Castle. He is commemmorated by a bust in the castle beaause of this. He also led to the creation of both the Craggaunowen and Lough Gur visitor centres through his interest in prehistory. Hunt lived with his family at Lough Gur Castle, and they all used the valuable collection in everyday use, as Hunt liked to use antiques in this manner.

Nicklaus Matsuda was born and raised in Northern California. He has played guitar in the bands Trace Element and Versus the World, both located in Santa Barbara. After releasing the debut album from Versus the World on Kung Fu Records, they appeared on the Warped Tour and a small tour with Strung Out. Due to confict with bassist, Mike Daventport (The Ataris) and singer Donald Spence (50 Cents Short),and also stuggling with his drug addictions, Nic has disappeared from the music scene entierly. Not much is know about his whereabouts today, but many say that he has paved the way for future Japanese guitarist and musicians along with Teppei Teranishi (Thrice) and Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park).

The American accent is the sound peculiar to the way that people from the United States and Canada speak the English language, or indeed any language. To non-Americans, it sometimes sounds like a nasal-like sound. It originated gradually among the new settlers in America.

Alex von Fürstenberg, (born in 1970) is the Co-Managing Member & Chief Investment Officer for Arrow Capital Management, LLC, a New York strategic investment company.

Alex von Furstenberg is the oldest child of her mother Diane who is married to billionaire Barry Diller. He graduated from Brown University in 1993 and worked in Allen & Company, Inc. in Risk Arbitrage before creating Arrow Capital Management, LLC. Through his company and various partnerships Alex von Fürstenberg manages approximately $500 million of assets invested primarily in public equity securities in the United States, Asia and Europe. The company acquired a lot of publicity in the financial circles after they purchased 45% of the shares outstanding in the W.P. Stewart & Co., Ltd. (NYSE:WPL) on May 21, 2008.

Since 1999 Alex von Furstenberg has also been Partner and a Director of Diane von Furstenberg Studio, LP, his mother’s designer clothing label. Von Furstenberg was married to Duty Free heiress Alexandra Miller before he left her in 2003.

Marshall Fishwick (1924-2006) is widely regarded as originator of the academic movement known as Popular Culture, and he co-founded the Popular Culture Association in the late 1960s. Fishwick began his teaching career at Washington and Lee University in 1949 and ended it at Virginia Tech in 2003.

Born in Roanoke, Virginia, and a graduate of Jefferson High School, Fishwick held degrees from the University of Virginia, the University of Wisconsin, and Yale University, and he later received honorary degrees from Krakov University, Bombay University, and Dhaka University. During his career, he received eight Fulbright Awards and numerous additional grants which enabled him to introduce the popular culture discipline at home and abroad in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Bangladesh, India, and Korea.

Fishwick founded the journal International Popular Culture, and was co-founder of the Popular Culture Association. He served as the association's president and was advisory editor of both the Journal of Popular Culture and the Journal of American Culture. Throughout his career he contributed articles on American studies and popular culture to papers and journals all over the world; he also published numerous articles and commentaries in American magazines and newspapers. In 1997 he was presented the Life Achievement Award in Popular Culture by the Popular Culture Association.

Fishwick’s literary career began while he was at sea with the Atlantic Fleet during World War II. His collected poems, The Face of Jang, were published in 1945. After the war, he earned a doctorate in American Studies at Yale University. His dissertation was published as A New Look at the Old Dominion.

Best-selling author Tom Wolfe was a student of Fishwick's in his early years at W&L. Wolfe calls Fishwick the best professor and "most magnetic teacher" he ever had. He credits him with inspiring him to get his graduate degree in American studies at Yale University. Fishwick was fresh out of the program himself when he came to W&L to teach American studies.

He went on to write more than twenty books and edited an additional dozen in the fields of history, literature, education, theology, and communication. A life-long interest in heroes resulted in such titles as Virginians on Olympus, The Hero: Myth and Reality, The Hero: American Style, Heroes of Popular Culture, and The Hero in Transition. Other titles included Lee after the War, General Lee’s Photographer, Springlore in Virginia, and Faust Revisited.

His books on popular culture included Seven Pillars of Popular Culture, Common Culture and the Great Tradition, Great Awakenings: Popular Religion in America, and most recently, two textbooks, Go and Catch a Falling Star and An American Mosaic. An inveterate traveler, Fishwick reminisced about his journeys in Around the World in Forty Years.

UVic grad hopes to unseat NDP leader in Victoria-Beacon Hill

Dallas Henault, a 25-year-old graduate of the University of Victoria, has put his name forward as the Liberal candidate to run against NDP Leader Carole James.

Henault made the announcement Saturday at the Marriott Victoria Inner Harbour hotel that he wanted to represent the provincial Liberal party in the riding of Victoria-Beacon Hill.

“This province and the city have been pretty good to me,” said Henault by way of explanation.

“I often refer to Victoria as the city that turned me into the young adult that I am.”

The native of Kelowna has lived in Victoria for six years, where he earned a degree in economics at the University of Victoria. He is single and is currently employed by the Liberal party.

His interest in politics goes back to age 14, said Henault in a telephone interview. “I think it was the economic conditions of the province at the time.”

Now he says Gordon Campbell is the leader he supports “and the way things are today, I believe that sincerely.”

Henault said he brings “youth, excitement and a different kind of experience than what’s been there before,” he said.

The main issues include economic stability, said Henault, adding that the environment is also important.

“I think a lot of people my age are looking to the environment as an issue and making sure for our kids the environment is there to enjoy. The premier has been a world leader on that, on the standards that he set.”

The date for the Liberal nomination meeting has not yet been set.

Strawberry Swing is part of Coldplay's latest album "Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends" (2008). Martin's use of a lower local register is evident in this song, as is his use of the classic falsetto, providing a good rhythm to the song. Various chords and pitch bends are used for the guitar background and a slow drumbeat adds a slightly lazy yet uplifting mood to it. Prego Della Piazza (est. 1987) is one of Toronto's oldest fine dining destinations. Formerly owned by celebrity restaraunteur Michael Carlevale (Boston Club, Bistro 990), Prego is located across from the Royal Ontario Museum at Bloor St. and Avenue Rd. On any given night the Prego crowd is a mix of young and old gliterrati of Toronto including visiting celebrities (like Cher, Demi Moore), powerful lawyers, fashionistas, actors, politicos and celebutantes.

The iconic restauranteur recently declared bankruptcy and was purchased by new owners. The restaurant is in running in full force with no apparent changes to menu. The restaurant has been the training bed for many of city's current celebrity chefs such as Massimo Capra.
