Rural, Wisconsin

The area code for Rural is listed in the box on the right as 920 - At this time I do not know if 920 crosses into Waupaca County at all. The area code for Rural is currently 715. The La Crosse Tribune

The La Crosse Tribune revamp its website on the internet. For Wikipedia especially WP Wisconsin that means the many citations using the La Crosse Tribune for citations are deadlinks. The citations will be staying in- goodfaith edits. Sigh... The Trib said they are working out the bugs for the archives. Thanks-RFD (talk) 12:41, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

University of Wisconsin campus names

Please let me preface this with an apology. I am sorry for having pursued a project of replacing hyphens with en dashes in the names of UW campuses without having discussed it first with this WikiProject. Despite my good intentions, I failed to consider how potentially disruptive this move would be. I therefore come before you to discuss this move, ignoring that it may be a fait accompli; if consensus opposes, I'll take it as my penance to thoroughly undo. For discussion: Should hyphens be replaced with en dashes in the names of UW campuses? e.g. University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh and UW–Oshkosh, rather than UW-Oshkosh.

Support for these reasons:

• The UW style guide wants an en dash between Wisconsin (or UW) and the campus name — i.e., the University itself considers an en dash to be the proper usage.
• MOS:ENDASH states "When naming an article, a hyphen is not used as a substitute for an en dash that properly belongs in the title".
• The lack of an en dash on a US-standard keyboard should not be a deterrent. It is easily added to an edit via either the Wikipedia tools or alt-0150. Of course, per the guidelines I have placed redirects at any possible hyphenated alternate names, to facilitate searches.
• Strictly as a matter of my aesthetic opinion, the en dash appears much more strong and robust in these names than a mere hyphen. I'm hopeful that UW alums would find it a visual improvement. Kevin Forsyth (talk) 13:07, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Proceed/Finish You've already spent so much time and effort to do these moves, I don't think you should undo. I probably would have opposed had this been asked before you did so much effort, but it's not a big deal to me. There appears to be no consensus between the different universities! My alma mater uses UW Oshkosh and University of Wisconsin Oshkosh all over its website [1]. The University of Wisconsin System website uses University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (a dash) [2]. LaCrosse uses both the dash and endash on their homepage [3]. Wow, this is making my head spin! Royalbroil 03:33, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Well and let's not even talk about the media outside of Wisconsin. It's almost always Wisconsin-Eau Claire or Wisconsin-Milwaukee or even the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Namur

There appears to be two redundant articles talking about the same locale: Namur, Wisconsin and Namur Historic District. The place article is just a location an pictures of historical plaques while the historic district article is nearly devoid of content. Looking through the links and references, there does not appear to be any differentiation between the two. Furthermore, the listed area of the district is 3,500 acres, which includes the entire hamlet plus the surrounding farms. I would like opinions on whether a merge is appropriate (at least until more substantial content is added). Thanks. --Polaron | Talk 17:30, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Do you really want to hook horns again with that other contributor on this topic again? This has been a real contentious topic of late. There certainly are enough reliable sources justifications for having articles about a community just like there are justifications for having articles on historic districts. Some thoughts-in the Namur Historical District article I added a citation from the Wisconsin Historical Society about the historical district. In the Wisconsin Historical Society article- it mentioned the Namur Historical District covers parts of the towns of Union and Gardner. Given the Political subdivisions of Wisconsin, it would be impractical to merge the two articles. Given the fact that the Namur Historical District does cover 2 different Wisconsin towns, would that mean merging the Namur Historical District article with the Union and Gardner articles? I would think not. I am in complete agreement with RoyalBroil about locking horns with the other editor. There has been way too much WikiDrama in the way of the violation of the 3RR, Users getting blocked-angry frustration, etc. Also I am getting weary of this. The recent Law Affair Scandal involving the sockpuppet and the various administrators, the coverup, has not help either. The historic district is fairly large (5.5 square miles) and does extend a bit beyond Union. However, the focus of the historic district is clearly the settlement of Namur. What I am thinking of is retaining the historic district article and merging the settlement article content (which at present isn't much) into the larger historic district article. I 'm not sure where the idea of merging into the town articles is coming from. I am not in any way proposing mergers to town articles. What I'm saying is, wouldn't it make sense to merge the stubby Namur settlement article into the Namur historic district article? Would there really be enough distinct content in this particular case for two independent articles? I know you are friends with another party to the WikiDrama you might be referring to and not with me but please evaluate this on its own merits. I agree with RoyalBroil that this is a contentious topic. Therefore, I would prefer if this can wait. I do know there has been edit wars. As for merging town articles there has been incidents of several Wisconsin towns articles being merged with Wisconsin village articles with the same name by people who do not realize that they are separate municipalities. I am suggesting that someone from the Wisconsin project do it rather than me as anything I do is apparently controversial. In any case, this is not urgent and I do agree that waiting is the best option for now. I have been to both the community and the historic district. They are complete opposites. The focus is the historic district is the farms in the area - the rural community! It is not the "urban" (but tiny community) named Namur. The district is the the farms surrounding that community. The historic district is named after the community because the historic district is most easily identified by this community's name. So I strongly oppose this merge. Alright, if you say so. I asked here since I'm not familiar with the place. In any case, there is no question that the settlement is part of the historic district and is one of the focal points of the district. Census-designated places in Wisconsin

One thing I found out about the census-designated places in Wisconsin is that they have some special government district usually lake protection/rehabilition district and that the various land owners associations usually are connected with these districts. Sanitary/sewage districts would be another example. I told Nyttend that I suspect that this is not only in Wisconsin-but in rest of the nation as well. Do you propose adding information about these districts within the existing CDP articles? I would imagine that would be the most helpful, as opposed to making new articles about each sanitary district. Speaking of CDPs, I'm curious about what people thing about changing the name or focus of some of the articles. Take for instance the article Chain O' Lakes-King, Wisconsin. King has been an unincorporated community since 1887, and has been home to the King post office for nearly that long as well. [4], [5]. Yet the name and layout of the article focus on the census designated place with a separate name. (Also, sorry about blanking the WPWI page a couple minutes ago... About the CO'L-King CDP - I would prefer to see the article moved to King, Waupaca County, Wisconsin and have the CDP redirected to it. Chain O'Lakes is a region of lakes by Waupaca - not really a community like the other CDPs like Neopit, Wisconsin. I went on a tour boat on them once and to Hartman Creek State Park (got those pics the last time I was there). I remember driving past the Veteran's home once - many, many moons ago - when my parents' long departed friend was there. Since King has a post office so it should have its own article. The CO'L/King article just doesn't make sense to me. And shame on you for blanking the page (just kidding). Royalbroil 00:35, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

If you get to King again, there are a bunch of places in the King Veterans home that are listed on the National Register - so their pictures should be appreciated. I get through Waupaca while driving on US 10, so that city it done, but the other parts of the county aren't. I take one (or both) of my cameras with me whenever I travel. Your photographic contributions are welcome of course! I know that you were gone for a while - now everyone pretty much uploads to Wikimedia Commons so that they can be used on the other Wikipedias. You're camera did very well, just like you did! Good job with the light and picking the right content. I haven't been to many of these communities in the past few years, so these pictures were definitely needed. I like taking pictures of the type of things that you did - main intersections, downtowns, city/village halls, high schoools, maybe a library, plus anything on the National Register of Historic Places is always welcome. I reviewed the images and added each to categories. I have created categories for each Wisconsin Highway that I've photographed. Then I'll add any image taken on the route. I have created categories for the most commons building types, like Category:Town halls in Wisconsin, Schools in Wisconsin, Libraries in Wisconsin, Rivers of Wisconsin, Category:Universities and colleges in Wisconsin, etc. I feel that we are responsible for all of the images in Commons Category:Wisconsin, which is a collection of anything to do with Wisconsin. A brief description of the various special districts within each CDP would be helpful provided that there a website for each. Towns vs. cities in Wisconsin

There's an article in Sunday's Appleton Post Crescent newspaper describing the difference between towns and cities. In case someone wants the content - I see that the Oshkosh Northwestern has the article too [6]. Royalbroil 13:10, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

This seems like another town versus city battle in Wisconsin. The Town of Cedarburg sued the City of Cedarburg to stop an annexation in 2005.[7] The state legislature changed the Wisconsin constitution in the 1950s to permit Oak Creek to incorporated as a city to stop the encroachment of Milwaukee.[8] The Town of Pewaukee staved off annexation from the Village of Pewaukee by incorporated as the City of Pewaukee.

From time to time there's also fights among cities & villages about which one of them will annex parts of towns. Just the other day in Kenosha County, the newly organized Village of Bristol (No article yet!) is coming into conflict with the Village of Pleasant Prairie over the annexation of the rest of the Town of Bristol.[9] Pleasant Prairie itself was incorporated when the Town of Pleasant Prairie began to be annexed by the City of Kenosha.[10] Over in the Town of Madison, officials want the town to dissolve, and the City of Madison and the City of Fitchburg fought over who would annex what.[11] The Village of West Salem and the City of Onalaska are in a fight over attempts by residents of the Town of Hamilton to get annexed by West Salem.[12] The Village of Brown Deer and the City of Milwaukee fought over annexation of the former Town of Granville—after referenda and a court battle, Milwaukee ended up getting all the rest of Granville, plus parts of Brown Deer.[13][14]

One of the interesting things to note in that article about Grand Chute is the boundary agreement between Appleton and Grand Chute. From what I understand, the state legislature has increased the power of towns in recent decades to give more power to towns, forcing cities to the table and craft these agreements in order to expand. Yea, there's always something going on. I used to work at an engineering company in Sheboygan and we would sometimes talk about land use as related to the surrounding towns. I see that the best content was missed in that article. Luckily I still have the article in my hand. I knew there was an article about towns vs cities/villages in Wisconsin. Neighborhoods in Wisconsin-merging with other articles-

There is a category: Category:Neighborhoods in Wisconsin with 14 names. Carol Beach, Dexter's Corner, Ranney, Tobin are part of the village of Pleasant Village and should be merged into the article itself. In fact all the articles could be merge into the parent articles-East Ellsworth article into the Ellsworth, Wisconsin article; Gile, Wisconsin in the Montreal, Wisconsin article, Crestview, Racine County, into the village of Caledonia, Wisconsin article. Of the 14 Freistadt has some historical value. All 14 articles are about nieighborhoods that exist in incorporated areas in Wisconsin. 2 of them Frankville and Evergreen were former CPDs. Yes, they could be merged, but I've seen articles on neighborhoods before (I think on Did You Know. So there are precedents to keep them. That said, many of these have very limited sources and content. I do think the CDP articles should remain, but I don't care about the other ones. I think that they should probably be looked at on a case-by-case basis. East Ellsworth, Wisconsin could easily be merged into Ellsworth, Wisconsin. But articles regarding neighborhoods of larger cities like Racine, Kenosha, or Madison should either be left as neighborhoods or merged into one article per city, such as Neighborhoods of Milwaukee. (And since there are strong pro-keep opinions about keeping CDP articles, I would have no problem keeping those as separate articles.) Cheers, --BaronLarf 04:56, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I agree with with Royalbroil the 2 former CPDS articles=Frankville, Evergreen should remained. Also because of its historical nature, Freistadt should remain. One note of interest East Ellsworth&Gile have own post offices and zipcodes which were the reasons the articles were started in the first place even though they are incorporated areas. That leaves the 4 neighborhoods of Pleasant Prairie and Crestview of Caledonia. They need to brought together somehow-Thanks-RFD (talk) 13:40, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Another area to look at-the village of Bristol, Wisconsin in Kenosha, Wisconsin was incorporated. The town of Bristol still exists but the village wants to annex the town. The town of Bristol has 2 unincorporated communities Pikesvile and Woodworth. If the town does get annexed we may may have to decided what to do with both of them. This is what happen to Pleasant Prairie and caledonia=they were towns and were incorporated as villages and the unincorporated communities became part of the villages-Thank you-RFD (talk) 13:57, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Curious, what would be the harm in redirecting the stub neighborhood articles? If I understand all of you rightly, none of these communities are notable as former municipalities and thus inherently notable. Redirects for most of these would be fine with me. Those articles with notable information (like Freistadt, Wisconsin) could have that info merged. Can East Ellsworth and Gile be included in the redirect? Both have PO and zipcodes? Also Carol Beach has some ancient Indian sites= Barnes Creek (Wisconsin). I merged East Ellsworth, Wisconsin into Ellsworth, Wisconsin; Gile, Wisconsin into Montreal, Wisconsin; Flintville, Wisconsin into Suamico, Wisconsin; Freistadt, Wisconsin into Mequon, Wisconsin; and Dexter's Corner, Wisconsin, Carol Beach, Wisconsin, Ranney, Wisconsin, and Tobin, Wisconsin into Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. I believe that these are all uncontroversial merges. I know that RFD has also made a couple merges (Georgetown, Racine, Wisconsin into Racine, Wisconsin and Crestview, Racine County, Wisconsin into Caledonia, Wisconsin are two I noticed.) If there are consensus objections to any of these merges, they are easily undone.

Reading the above discussion, it looks like we have the following articles left:

• Evergreen, Marathon County, Wisconsin and Franksville, Wisconsin are former CDPs. It appears that Royalbroil (and perhaps Nyttend) are against merging and redirecting these articles. I am in favor of merging, but I can wait a year or two until the 2010 Census data is out with new census data not including these areas. At that point, there will be no unique information in these articles that could keep them from being merged into their respective municipalities.
• Nakoma, Madison, Wisconsin This is a neighborhood of Madison, Wisconsin. A merge would not be wise here, in my opinion, because this is just one neighborhood of many in this major city. I believe this article is best merged into a future Neighborhoods of Madison, Wisconsin article with additional Madison neighborhoods.
• Truesdell, Wisconsin Neighborhood of Kenosha, Wisconsin. As with Nakoma, I believe it should be merged into a Neighborhoods of Kenosha, Wisconsin article with additional Kenosha neighborhoods.

I redirected the Georgetown, Racine, Wisconsin neighborhood article maybe a little prematurely- When a section about neighborhoods in Racine is started maybe there will mention of this neighborhood. Addition of assessment data

Looking around at other state wikiprojects, it looks like several use assessment tables. (WP:WPMN, WP:CAL, etc.) Any objection to placing such a table on WPWI? I know that Wikipedia:WikiProject Wisconsin/Assessment already exists, but it might be a good idea to put the chart on the first page; as one user stated a couple months ago here, there are some articles (like History of Wisconsin) which are of high importance but could use some work. --BaronLarf 21:25, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Pageview stats

I've requested that User:Mr.Z-man (through his User:Mr.Z-bot) create a subpage for the wikiproject that will list the most popular pages in the WikiProject by compiling monthy pageview stats. After a recent request, I added WikiProject Wisconsin to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wisconsin/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. Sounds interesting, maybe a Saturday or Sunday afternoon would be best for me. This time of year I want to get to the racetracks on Friday &/or Saturday nights. Superior, Wisconsin

I took many photos during a recent stay in Superior, mostly of buildings. I tried to get the ones listed on the National Register. Alan Kulwicki second attempt at Featured status

On Commons, I discussed with another contributor about getting something NASCAR featured for WikiProject NASCAR. We agreed that Alan Kulwicki is probably the best option. I attempted it at Featured Article before and it didn't pass because there was too much to do. It didn't fail because it was real bad. Since he was from Wisconsin, I request that members of this WikiProject review the article for excellence in grammar, spotless sourcing using impeccable reliable sources, content flow, etc. We decided to nominate it in just under 2 weeks after I get back from an extended weekend vacation next weekend. Wouldn't it have been difficult for the Wisconsin State Legislature to have acted in 1840, given that Wisconsin didn't become a state until 1848? :)

I note two of the three references cited on the page simply state "legislature" and the third explicitly states "territorial legislature".

WikiProject U.S. tagging

I've been in a discussion at WikiProject United States. One senior editor wants to use a bot to add WikiProject United States to the talk pages for any article in certain U.S. categories - even if it's already part of a state WikiProject. How do you think Wikipedians will react to seeing WikiProject Wisconsin and WikiProject United States on article talk pages? Royalbroil 03:09, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

I had been adding WP-Wisconsin to categories relating to Wisconsin. This helps us out to see what categories would be needed that are on record. This would be a duplication of the various WP States Projects. Also I have a love/hate relationship with the bots especially in starting a simple stub of an article only to be classified as a copyright violation when none exists. Please no more bots! The point of this is that some projects are active and some are not and some that are may not be in the future. This is just an attemtpt to try and ensure that all US related topics are covered, preferably from multiple angles (National, State, potentially city, etc). I also want to clarify that this bot will only add the WPUS banner and assessment. It isn't replacing the state banner, making statements of copyvios and the like or anythnig else. Bots are not bad, they save us from doing painstaking work by automating tedious functions. Plus, If I don't use a bot then that means having to manually tag tens of thousands of articles myself. Further, although this project may be active many of the state projects are not and this will allow multiple points of visibility on the article. Is it duplicative, yes no doubt but is it harmful to the article. Nope and in fact its necessary to ensure that articles are covered from different angles. It is no more a problem than having 2 different states or having a state and the WPMILHIST US/ACW/ARW task force. The WikiProjects run autonimously of one another. The state projects might logically fall under WP:US as you state but its by association only, the projects are separate entities. I also want to clarify that if I dont "tag" articles that are already associated to a US related wikiproject (such as a state) it will mean having to exclude more than 100 different US related Wikiprojects, which would be extremely hard if its possible at all. With that said, if Wisconsin wanted to work in cooperation with WPUS and allow the WP Wisonsin banner to be embedded in the US banner in a similar way that the WPMILHIST does task forces (just to be clear it would still be its own project) or how WPBIO does its Priority/workgroup=? then that could be done as well. Just for curiousity sake I went and did a comparison of articles that WPUS and WPWisconsin have. As of today, WPUS currently has 10750 (I updated the numebrs this morning they were at 10441 yesterday), WPWisconsin has 11016 and of those only 101 are currently in-common between the 2 projects. Upon further review most of the 101 are Medal of Honor recipients. Which reflects another interesting point of view in that a Medal of Honor recipient, perhaps arguably, is just as important from a National perspective as they are from a state or local perspective. --Kumioko (talk) 18:44, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Wisconsin municipalities categories

To my fellow Wisconsin Wikipedians administrators and editors- We need to keep an eye out for any new categories involving Wisconsin municipalities that will be appearing on the recent changes. User Tomer started this with the unincorporated communities of Dunn and Eau Claire Counties with categories for them and now User: Ktr101 started this for Westfield, Wisconsin in Marquette County. These new categories need to be correct according to the Political subdivisions of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin counties navigational templetes are also helpful. The categories also need to have the WP Wisconsin templates with: |class=category be put on the talk pages. That way we have this on record in case there are any questions, etc. Several WikiProjects involving the various states in the United States have these types of categories but not us. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Expand on Reuben Glaser

Hi there, StupidDumbGnome (talk) here. Im just a fan from Wisconsin but I decided to write the article about Reuben Glaser when I saw he didn't have one, which i was kind of surprised about given that he was all over the news a few months ago. I see there had been some deleted articles, but I think we can all agree he is at least kind of notable now and there's no shortage of sources and articles to validate that, but once again I am just a fan, not an expert, and i'm new here to Wiki, so I worry that many things are excluded from the page. I've been following him for years and he has been providing a unique Wisconsin liberal and humorous voice that carries quite a bit of weight in this state (or at least wth me) and is expanding. I'm sure you could dig up all sorts of stuff about him, such as stuff he's written, things he's said, people he's met, etc. Also maybe elaborate on the Rosie Jones Rosie Jones (model) rumors. I almost added their rumored romance to her page too but I wasn't sure if I should because it's just a rumor. Should I do that? Maybe one of you guys? I don't want to do something i'll regret. But his twitter and her twitter certainly suggest something more than friendship and i think that's really interesting if you know him or follow him online like I do. Could somebody better at Wikipedia add some stuff to the page and maybe make a night project out of it or something? i think its probably lacking a lot right now. Thanks a lot!

Cities and villages are not part of towns

I noticed that a lot of articles on villages in Wisconsin state that they are located "in" a particular town or another. Cities and villages in Wisconsin are legally independent of the towns (townships) which surround them, and whose former land they were probably incorporated from. An example of this is Randolph, Wisconsin, which I recently edited, but left the original statements untouched. If there were only a few of these articles, I would normally change the wording to reflect the fact that they are independent, but there are just too many of these for me to want to change them individually. You may want to read the Political subdivisions of Wisconsin article. Also in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Towns are known as towns not townships as in other states.Thanks-RFD (talk) 19:38, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Wisconsin At Wikimania 2014

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. Mayors of La Crosse, Wisconsin

In the last few days- 2 articles Mark Johnsrud and Mathias Harter were created. Both men were mayors of La Crosse, Wisconsin-Matt Harter was elected mayor in the 2009 Wisconsin spring elction. Personally- I have doubts about the notability of the articles considering that La Crosse is a small city and I do live here. I did raise a question with one editor that the question of the notability of the mayors of La Crosse may not be dry and cut as it seems. One example John Medinger- he was mayor 1997-2005 yet prior to this he was in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Another example would be Milo Knutson- he was mayor from 1955-1965 but was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate serving from 1969 until 1977. In this both would be notable because of their service in the Wisconsin Legislature. I did refrained from doing the Johnsrud and Harter articles myself because of the nagging question are they notable enough to be included? Can one do a chart or list of the Mayors of La Crosse. Also Mathias Harter was one of the youngest mayors to be elected in Wisconsin. Resources collection?

I have an official 1973 Wisconsin DOT map which I'm happy to made publicly available for anyone to use as a reliable source like I did for the route of defunct Wisconsin Highway 84 including Little Kohler, Wisconsin. I was going to mention it here, but it make me think about something even better. In my other WikiProjects, we have compiled lists of sources held by members. The best example is Wikipedia:WikiProject Motorsport/Library. I know I have several Wisconsin Blue Books and some are old (circa 1950s). So if someone needs a specific source, they leave a message on the owner's talk page (or could email if the user isn't active anymore). Who's interested to add their sources to a collection? The Episcopal Dioceses in Wisconsin

There has been some discussions about merging the Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, and Milwaukee Episcopal Dioceses into one Diocese or merging the Eau Claire and Fond du Lac Dioceses. Members of the present Wisconsin Legislature-more articles are needed

More articles about members of the present Wisconsin Legislature the 99th Session needed to be started. OrangeMike pointed this out to me. What is interesting most of them are the Republican members of the Legislature need to have articles done although there are 2-3 Democrats have article that are needed. OrangeMike pointed out the VoteSmart/Follow the Money/their legislative websites are useful. However, the Wisconsin Historical Society is very useful-for if the members of the present Wisconsin Legislature leave office for any reason these websites will be inoperable but the citations from the historical society would remain. I am not into political science/politics to do this. I am more into the history of past members who help founded communities in Wisconsin and ended up in the legislature. The notable section includes first level sub national divisions and that includes state legislator. So yes state legislators are included. I have been starting many articles about state legislators and no one said anything. I also been doing articles about Roman Catholic diocesan bishops-they are notable and no one said anything. Unsourced BLPs

There has been a HUGE uproar lately about unsourced biographies of living persons. I urge EVERYONE to read the Signpost article because it's going to effect everyone. The short story is one admin became extremely bold and just started deleting sourced biographies before others stopped him/her. Jimbo supported this admin. The deletion stopped and there are proposals about how to deal with it. I expect our WikiProject to soon be handed a list of unsourced BLPs and for us to be told to deal with them immediately or else they will get deleted. Hopefully everyone will have a method to easily recover this information - if not let an admin like me, OrangeMike, Tomer or BaronLarf know. That's why everyone got or is getting their own list on their talk page to deal with. At least I hope there will be enough common sense to allow WikiProject to deal with the problems. So if you see an unsourced BLP that you care about, please be proactive and cite it with at least one reliable source. Let me know if you need help learning how to do it. I think you should do what's right and source the entire article - that's what I've been doing. I imagine we'll soon have to prioritize that upcoming list. I'm worried about overwhelming someone like myself who helps in many WikiProjects including numerous ones with extremely small membership. I really doubt that I'll be able to help much here. I have mixed feelings about this push to delete unsourced articles. While I appreciate the need for references, it's WP policy that non-controversial statements don't need sourcing. But I suppose that a BLP should have a greater need for proper sourcing than your average article. Unfortunately my watchlist has quite a few unsourced articles that I've written. I hoep I can find my source material. I've gotten better at sourcing than I used to be. Are there any resources that can help teach people how to do it? Well requiring sources is here to stay. I suspect BLP is the first wave. You can read up at Wikipedia:When to cite and Wikipedia:Citing sources. But the real one to read is Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners with citation templates. Then article articles could be considered for Good or Featured Articles because using the citation templates is expected at that level. You might as well learn how to do it "right" in the first place. Here's the easiest way and the way that I do it: On the top of the editing box is a toolbar with a big bold B for using the bold function. You can add a button the right hand side of this bar that takes care of the common scenarios - all you have to do is paste the data into the fields. You add the button by editing your preferences. Click the "My Preferences" link in the uppper right. Then click the "Gadgets" tab on the right. Lastly you add a check mark by click on the box before "refTools, adds a "cite" button to the editing toolbar for quick and easy addition of commonly used citation templates." Bristol, Wisconsin, Kenosha County town and village Pikeville/Woodworth

Part of the Town of Bristol in Kenosha County incorporated itself as a village and is seeking to annex rest of the town and the village of Pleasant Prairie also in the county opposing this. Okay the town of Bristol has 2 unincorporated communities Pikeville and Woodworth. When fate of the town of Bristol is decided Pikeville&Woodworth will probably be incorporated in one of the villages and then the articles about Pikeville and Woodworth will be part of one of the village's articles. Also in the town of Bristol, is the unincorporated community of Mud Lake, Wisconsin. Mud Lake is an important archeological site. However, the article about Mud Lake is not started. I started the Bristol, Wisconsin article in January to deal with the new village. There is an agreement between the old Town of Bristol, the village of Pleasant Prairie, and the city of Kenosha regarding how much of the Town of Bristol that Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie can annex. From what I've read, it's up in the air whether these agreements apply to the new village. A referendum on the issue is being held up in court by Pleasant Prairie.[15] Pikeville and Woodworth are, at this point, still a part of the town. Geneva Lake Historic Places

I have a line on a bunch of images taken on Geneva Lake in the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin area. Green Bay (Lake Michigan) wording

There were a bunch of articles calling it the Bay of Green Bay which is what it is called locally to differentiate it from the City of Green Bay. In 2006, there was a discussion about what to name the article and it received its current name from its consensus. There's a discussion happening right now on its talk page and we're searching for a clean way to make it clear that rivers that flow into it are flowing into the bay not the city. I'd like the input of more than 2 minds because I'm not satisfied with any of the wording proposed so far. The wording is moving in the right direction. We need to have some guidelines about naming Wisconsin towns. According to the Wisconsin Constitution Artcle IV section 23 and Article XI section 3, towns in Wisconsin are a constitutional entity. The town of Eureka in Polk County would be such an entity. The unincorporated community of Eureka, Wisconsin in Winnebago County is located in the town of Rushford. The proper title should be Eureka, Polk County, Wisconsin. One has to take into account if there are anymore unincorporated communities named Eureka existing in Wisconsin. Give the constitutional basis of the Wisconsin town-the naming of Wisconsin towns should been given precedent over unincorporated communities unless they vote to incorporated themselves as a village or city or vote themselves a town with that same name. I disagree about towns taking precedent over unincorporated communities. When someone is talking, or searching the internet for a location (like checking for weather forecast), a community of any type is usually what they are looking for. Someone in Eureka, Winnebago County won't search for the weather at Rushford, they would search for the weather for Eureka. On the other hand, when someone in the town of Rushford is searching for weather, they would never select the town. They would select a nearby community like Eureka, Omro, Ripon, Berlin, or most likely Oshkosh. If you change this discussion to the communities in the North Woods of Wisconsin like the unincorporated community of Spread Eagle, the point becomes a lot more relevant. I live in the unincorporated "area" called Lakefield, in the town of Grafton. It's just a neighborhood, really, with a recognised historical name. Nobody ever says, "I live in Lakefield". We don't identify ourselves as a community. So if there was an actual town called Lakefield, somewhere else in the state, I would expect it to take naming precedence. However, I think there are unincorporated settlements that are really identified by their names. • Redefining a territory thru over editing and misunderstanding ------ Wisconsin is a complicated place. When we talk about "place", we are discussing a territory, a geographic location, the land. The land is surveyed and divided into sections. That sets its boundries. In Wisconsin, those "places", the lands, are counties, townships, cities, villages, and unincorporated communities. They are nested inside each other but each is a territory and specific location within the state. You can find it on the surface of the earth. Each of these territories has a formal title. http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/vitalrecords/pdf/cvtlist.pdf is the list of townships, cities, villages, and unincorporated communities. (Don't be fooled by the heading, "If unincorporated, name of town or village". That refers to the government responsible for keeping the statistics.)

Wisconsin also has "towns", however the terms "town" refers to the body of the people, its government and citizens that live within the boundries of the township. The Wisconsin statute states, "A town is a body corporate and politic, with those powers granted by the law." The government of the town has an official name, "Town of ...." The Town of Neenah is a corporate business that administers the city. They are 2 completely different things but coexist.

Some articles are further propagating this general misunderstanding. The article is about the "place", the township. The first line of many articles say, LocationName is a "town" in This County, Wisconsin. When it should accurately say, LocationName is a township in This County, Wisconsin. The article can add that it is governed by the Town of LocationName or add an entire section about the government of LocationName Township but it is inaccurate to say it is a "town".

One is not more important than the other. One is not secondary to the other. It is distinct and separate. It's Title identifies and defines it and is the disambiguation.

• The formal Title of the territory is "Wisconsin".
• The formal Title of the territory is "Winnebago County".
• The formal Title of the territory is "Neenah Township".
• The formal Title of the territory is "Neenah".
• The formal Title of the territory is "Eureka".

When there are multiple townships in the state with the same name, they are disambiguated with the county name in the article title to further identify its location.

In the case of Eureka, Wisconsin. There are 2 territories in question. One is Eureka, Wisconsin the unincorporated community in Winnebago County. The other, Eureka Township in Polk County. Eureka's article was titled "Eureka, Wisconsin" but populated with data from Eureka Township, Polk County because of the naming convention and different counties. A total inaccurate representation of Eureka, Wisconsin. It is not an editor's discretion to rename a territory. If it were, we could take River off Fox River. Dells off Wisconsin Dells. These are not nicknames or alternate titles.

• I read thru the archives on this subject because I wanted to have a full understanding of why there is no naming consensus. There is clearly a misunderstanding of the difference between "place" and "body of government". I also saw comments about giving the unincorporated community "a less desirable name" and it being "a mere grouping of homes".

What is the solution? Use the formal title of the territory in the article title. Keep government and personal characterizations out of the equation. Those are biases that are causing inaccuracies. It isn't a question of you're right, I'm wrong. It isn't a matter of claim to the name. It is accuracy. These are the names given to them by the people. It is not up to an online encyclopedia to rename them.

Townships are subdivisions of counties. If there are multiple townships in different counties, only the townships require disambiguation.

The "formal name" of a constitutionally-organized city, village or town in Wisconsin is Name, Wisconsin; by Wikipedia standards, an article about a unique city, village or town of Name is called Name, Wisconsin. When there are both a City (or Village) of Name and a Town of Name, we distinguish by saying Name, Wisconsin for the city or village, and Name (town), Wisconsin for the town. We do NOT use Name Township, Wisconsin anywhere. • Understanding "towns" and their names...

As stated, a "town" in Wisconsin refers to the people and government. A "town" is not a place. You will see and hear them as "Town of .....". A "town" is comprised of rural and lower density populations geographically located in the townships and unincorporated communities. The people of these territories needed a way to administer, set up policing, fire control, create laws, and just make decisions as a group. So they created a "town", a company. That company has an official name, "Town of .....". It is corporate and politic, with those powers granted by law. In the case of the territories of Eureka, Wisconsin and Rushford Township, those people combined and formed the "Town of Rushford". That is it's corporate name. So what do you have for titles, when you look at the whole picture, town and land:

• Rushford Township, Wisconsin (territory)
• Town of Rushford, Wisconsin (people of Eureka and Rushford Township)
• Eureka Township, Wisconsin (territory)
• Town of Eureka, Wisconsin (people of Eureka Township and their unincorporated territories)

If another community in another county are known as Town of Eureka, it looks like this:

When names are the same and governments are different (town) or (village) is added, correct? The focus of the articles is government, correct? When naming articles about government populations that have the same name as none government populations, shouldn't the government population be recognized as such in its name to be consistent? One is government, one is not. Geography has nothing to do with it. The focus is government. The "town" exists as a government, shouldn't it be recognized as such. It has a class. You seem to be frantically grasping at straws in a futile effort to find an excuse to privilege your favorite Eureka above the more populous and actually incorporated one. That is not the case at all. I'm using Eureka as an example in a discussion, in a effort to understand and clarify what the naming convention is for "place". I should have changed Eureka to something fictitious for clarity. I'm not the only person that doesn't understand the focus of government by Wikipedia. No one explained that geography was not a factor. "Place" has multiple meanings. Civil government as a "place" is not the first thing that comes to mind. I am well educated, well traveled and have lived in many locations in the US and Europe with the military and NATO. I understand governments. When I think of "place", it literally relates to geography. I would stand up and debate for any "place" not just my own. Eureka has been adjusted and I am grateful. It is fine as it is. Category:Wisconsin Territory judges

I started a category for the members of the Wisconsin Terrorial Supreme Court. The category for the 4 members of the territorial court by listing them as associate justices and in one case Charles Dunn as CJ of the court was not accurate; the Wisconsin Supreme Court was not operable until 1848 when Wisconsin was admitted to the Union. 1800s Wisconsin survey notes / town articles

I was delighted to find a couple weeks back that images of the notebooks from the 1830-1860 survey of Wisconsin are available online! If you're not aware, the U.S. government had surveyors walk through most of the state in those years, marking every section corner and making brief notes on what they saw, including tree species, stream depths, and improvements by man. (For more info on the survey, see the start of this article from Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine or this article from the Historical Society.) The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands and the UW-Madison Libraries have put the images online here, and from their Search link, you can get a glimpse of what the surveyors saw when they walked near your home 150 years ago. For much of Wisconsin, that's before the land was logged - long before I thought there were written records. And it covers places off the beaten path, where I can't find references for the past ten years, much less the 1800s. That brings me to Wikipedia.

Wikipedia has many stub articles on Wisconsin towns which contain census data and little else. Most of our rural "towns" are the same 6 by 6 mile squares as the townships of the 1800s survey. For each of those townships, the surveyor wrote a brief general description of what he saw. This description can make a nice start for a History section in an article on the town. Here are a few examples:

• McKinley, Taylor County, Wisconsin (References 3, 4 & 5 at the bottom are links to the source notes.)
• Arpin (town), Wisconsin

If you enjoy this sort of thing, I'd suggest transcribing the general descriptions for your own favorite towns into the Wikipedia articles. It's good for readers to see that there is written history specific to their little place. By linking from Wikipedia to the images, we can lure interested readers to the original notes to learn more. By transcribing excerpts from some of the notes, we can help those who can't decipher faint hand-writing, and we can start a history article off with the voice of someone from long ago. Adding phone area codes to communities

I think it's time for us to develop the infobox on Wisconsin communities to add the area code and I have made some work on it in my sandbox. I want to do a bot request to have it added. I have used this in many other states and it's extremely helpful. All but 13 of the 72 counties have a single area code and they have been divided out - pulled to the bottom. The question is how do we separate out the rest of the counties. It seems like we should just sort by the cities and villages - meaning skip the unincorporated communities and towns since there probably are some towns with two area codes. Since 920 is getting a layover area code in 2014, should we should do both right now to save work later? Does anyhow have a source to divide out the remaining counties? Feel free to edit as needed. Wisconsin National Register of Historic Places Articles

Every County in Wisconsin has a nation Register of Historic Places (NRHP) list. Unfortunately, for many counties, very few places on these lists have articles. I encourage members of WikiProject Wisconsin to try to make these articles. I know that this also falls under WikiProject National Register of Historic Places' "authority", but, it also has to do with Wisconsin history so we should try to help if we can.(Loopygrumpkins (talk) 21:38, 26 October 2009 (UTC))

I would be happy to take care of the Marathon County list when I am there during December. I may also be able to provide research on sites in nearby counties, operating under the assumption that historical societies and other local sources will be the only place to get any real information about most of these sites. I'm busy trying to photograph these places as I travel around the state, and I encourage everyone to help me. I've photographed hundreds of listings already. I did Sheboygan, Oshkosh, Manitowoc, and many other major cities in eastern Wisconsin. I was helped by Dspradau for Fond du Lac. I'm planning to do the Appleton area on the day after Thanksgiving with a friend from the area. I do occasionally create articles for Wisconsin historic sites, but I have WAY too many ideas compared to the time that I have available. History of Wisconsin is in Need of Expanding

The size of of this page is shameful in comparison to the size of history pages for other states. There are huge chucks of information missing, one of them being the history Wisconsin from about AD 1900 to the present. I think it should one of the projects top priorities and that something should be said about it on the WikiProject Wisconsin homepage.(Loopygrumpkins (talk) 21:38, 26 October 2009 (UTC))

Wisconsin could use more historical content beyond that of 1900. For example, Wisconsin's contribution to the Dillinger Days. More specifically, the Little Bohemia Lodge should at least be spoken on, due to it being a highly notable failed attempt at the FBI capture of John Dillinger in the 1930s. I see that wispolitics.com has a flickr photostream and everything that I checked had a free use license. I added one of their images of Mary Burke. Does anyone else who knows more about politics want to check through the photos and copy some to Commons for using here on the English Wikipedia? Suspicious County Seals

I noticed a bunch of County seals are being added to WI and IL counties by two SPA's. For Example, Langlade County, Wisconsin, File:Seal of Langlade County Wisconsin.svg. Their similarity and duplication of state seals makes me wonder if they are legitimate. See the seals for Illinois [16] and Wisconsin [17]. I removed the seals added for WI counties on Dec 28th since they appear to be self made and I can not find evidence that they are official seals in actual use by the counties in question. They made hundreds for several states, WI, IL, NY, IN, MI and NJ to name a few I've seen. I posted a question to c:Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#User-Made_US_County_Seals, but no one responded. I would think that at a minimum the images should clearly say they are the someone's own work and that they are derivatives of the state seal. Help with (Wisconsin political figure) Reince Priebus

Hi all, I'm looking for help on the article for Wisconsinite Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus. An editor over at WikiProject Biography's politics and government work group suggested that editors here might be able to help.

Briefly, the article needs some updating to add detail about his career prior to becoming chair of the RNC, and to cover details of his tenure as chair. One key example: there's currently no mention of his previous role as chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party in the article.

On the article's Talk page, I've proposed some initial updates and corrections. While some have been made in the article, editors who assisted have not returned to look at the suggestions for the Career section. To be fully transparent, I should disclose that I'm working as a consultant to the RNC and due to that financial conflict of interest won't make any direct edits to the article. Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Alternate language names for cities

An IP anon is adding alternative names for cities to a number of Wisconsin settlements, for example: [18] (Hoocąk: Teejóp from Physical Spatial Place. (2010, June 1). Hocąk Teaching Materials Volume 1, p. 455.) Is this something that the project needs or wants in city articles? Since the source is not available for verification, I don't know if these words are just translations that were created after the settlement was founded or if they are historical location names from before the area was settled by Europeans. I don't think we need to list alternative names for cities, unless the city's name is based on some other language, etc, ie. History of Milwaukee. I know that the French language creates new french words instead of using the english word for new inventions, etc. I think this is the same sort of thing, with no historical basis. --Dual Freq (talk) 23:37, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Donate to the WHS. Many of their images are not free / PD. I have literally thousands of images that have been uploaded to Wikipedia / Commons over the past decade which would probably be very interesting to them. They come from all over the state. Titles of Wisconsin town articles

A couple of editors have been making wholesale changes to the titles of Wisconsin town articles. (See [19] and [20].) I've asked them to discuss the matter on this talk page, but they're not interested. Could someone please have a look at what they're doing? @32.218.38.203: I'm not on any campaign to do any such thing. I created a few redirects so that U.S. Route 8 and U.S. Route 141 would continue to link to the intended locations, albeit through a redirect. {{WIint}} uses a parameter called |town= to link to a town in WI that's displayed in the location column of the junction list table. When we specify |town=Pembine, it automatically links to [[Pembine (town), Wisconsin|Town of Pembine]], and I created the redirect so that readers would still get to "Pembine, Wisconsin". When we specify |town=Beaver and |ctdab=Marinette, it links to [[Beaver (town), Marinette County, Wisconsin|Town of Beaver]]. Again, if I didn't create the appropriate redirect, there would be a redlink in the article's junction list table after I switched the template to use the appropriate parameters.

This is all I did, and nothing more. There is no campaign to change article titles, just a few cheap redirects to ensure that an article continues to link to the intended locations after a template change. Imzadi 1979 → 02:24, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

The Administrative divisions of Wisconsin article explains the local government in Wisconsin. That is essential reading. Also in the Wisconsin Constitution Article IV section 23: "town government" is used and is the legal and constitutional usage not township which is use in other states. @RFD: no one has mentioned "township" in regards to this, except to note that a "town" in WI is essentially the same as a "township" in Michigan or Minnesota. Redirects are helpful and cheap so I don't see the problem with creating them. RFD is right about them being referred to as towns not townships. They are similar to townships in other states. It was a real mess figuring out how to create consistent title names for locations when you consider that the same name was used for towns, villages, cities in different counties. There's even a town and unincorporated community with the same name as its county! I'm impressed to see that debaters actually understood this point throughout the discussion. The bot doesn't handle importances because many projects actually have an objective importance rating scheme which varies based on topic area. Not to mention that even subjective importances vary a lot by project. Expanding Regions of Wisconsin

I noticed Regions of Wisconsin only mentions one categorization schema, which inconveniently is not very easy to apply since it doesn't really line up with county borders. However, it seems like there are a lot of ways to categorize the regions of the state. Here are some links to a variety of different schema. Does anyone have any opinion if any of them make more sense for organizing Category:Wisconsin geography stubs?

Sure, @Royalbroil:, two approaches:

1. wp:NRHPPROGRESSWI reports on numbers in each of Wisconsin's counties, is updated almost every day, allows you to zero in each specific county list-article of NRHPs having any "NRIS-only" items. Current total is 13, with 8 being in National Register of Historic Places listings in St. Croix County, Wisconsin. If you install a tool into your account and use Microsoft Edge rather than Chrome browser, following cursory instructions at wp:NRHPHELP#NRHP stats reading (plus perhaps more help to get it to work), you can see the yellow NRHP stats info and further get the list-article to selectively show just the NRIS-only ones.

2. Run wp:PETSCAN tool to find the intersection of Category:Articles sourced only to NRIS and Category:Wisconsin, i.e. click PetScan applied to this task, which currently yields 13 articles (when category depth set to 5). Several of these articles are not listed above. For example it finds SS William A. Irvin, not listed above. --Doncram (talk) 02:25, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

NRHP infobox generator updated to include NRHP registration doc ref including photos

Hey, the NRHP infobox generator (http://elkman.net/nrhp/) has been updated by User:Elkman to cover more years of data (now through 2013 or 2014), and in other ways. Elkman may still be tinkering with this. However the best news IMO is that it now includes a written-out NRHP registration document reference including photos. E.g. for Henry Sherry House, it includes:

So has consensus changed at the NRHP wikiproject to remove the "Address Restricted" images on Great Lakes shipwrecks? WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
