[edit]Formally it would be from Proto-Hellenic *genehā́, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁eseh₂, feminine derivation from *ǵénh₁os (whence γένος (génos)), from *ǵenh₁-. Compare εἶδος (eîdos) - ἰδέα (idéa).
